Depends how you look at it. Massa was in front prior to the crash. If you take the result prior to the crash or ignore this race altogether, Massa would have won the championship.

Massa winning it with or without the Renault race fix would have been a hollow victory thanks to the meddling of the FIA .

On the main news here tonight "is this the biggest con in racing history"

In the good old days NASCAR set the standards for creative interpretation of the rules.

I just saw an interview of Keke. He thinks that if Alonso is found to have had any knowledge of race fixing, before or after the incident, the likely penalty is a two year ban from F1.

JJ Lehto also opined that it would be very naive to think that a team's undisputed lead driver isn't privy to every single thing that takes place within the team. His verdict: Alonso is guilty as sin.

FB found 2 World Champions, MS and FA, and won back to back world championships with them so I don't think any team would let him go that easily, since he is proven, unless he did something really really bad, which in this case appears that he did.

I've never bought into the idea that retired drivers automatically possess good analytical skills or insights.

My point is that if Renault were committed to F1 and Flav was producing a winner now he'd not be dumped so quickly, guilty or not.

Not sure about that Dave it is a biggy this one. Only a real MASSIVE fine possibly, but really this is the only way out for Renault they can stay in F1 I think, in which I for one is glad about.

The essence of "extortion" isn't whether the exposure is real or bogus, but that the threat is to expose information unless some action is taken.

So the "extortion" charge might still be on the table.

Renault might have just folded to Max's extortion --- there wasn't much chance of getting a "not guilty" from Max with Flav still in the mix, and Renault probably wanted to try to avoid a draconian penalty. (Such as a 100M fine.)

That could be interpreted in so many innocent ways though.

Piquet, Jr. might become like Eddie Irvine, Jr, i.e. self styled playboy except without the real estate success that Irvine has. Piquet, Jr. will never return to F1 and probably won't have much success elsewhere either.

I'm renaming the F1 World Championship "As the World Turns" since the soap opera has never been thicker.

His F1 future was mostly over due to his observed arrogance and lack of performance. But this debacle laid to rest ANY thought that he could ever return, even as a janitor in F1.
