Was this your first time at VIR? What did you think about the track? Which corner was the most challenging?

First time. VIR was awesome. Best facilities of any track I've been. Good mix of slow technical (2nd gear) and 5th gear (3 times a lap). As I posted in the other thread, my remaining corners leaving significant time on the table was 10 and 11. Although maybe not losing a lot of time because they end in heavy braking around the tree. All the setups to the long straights where you gain the most time I was doing OK.

I was actually struggling with 3 in practice and qualifying until Peter gave me a visual reference and I NAILED it every single time from that point forward, that might have gone from my worst to best corner. Thanks Peter!

So sad I missed this, but when you have a free beach house for the 4th of July it's hard to say no. I absolutely love VIR and unless the FCA does something in Oct I won't get down there this year.

looks like a great event! I hope to get to VIR some day; it's one of my favorite tracks on iracing. can't imagine what it's like in person.

btw Rob, can you fly all the way there without refueling or do you have to make a stop or two? that's gotta be ~1,000 miles "as the crow flies".

I made it both ways non-stop 920 nm (1058 sm). That is as far as I want to go with IFR reserves and no wind factors. I had +/- wind both ways that about canceled each other out overall. With a strong tailwind I could go over 1200 nm full power, but a strong headwind might cut it down to 750 nm.

Do you have any vids of a complete lap from inside the car? It would be interesting to compare mental notes versus a MX-5 car.

    Thx, Dale

    Great video Rob!

and the fact you did a 2:09 in a 355 first time out was spectacular. What a great race and not a scratch on any car in two races. Congrats to all the FCRA pilots!!

    Great stuff. Gimme mo!

Are you staying flat through the esses in 5th(?) or are you lifting slightly?

I'm lifting slightly, but maybe its possible not. Peter gave me a good tip that going up the hill car has more resistance, so even if you feel like it can't take more you actually need to apply more throttle just to keep it even.

I still never found the limits of 10, now I'm wondering if just staying in 5th was better. Even just a slight tap and downshift into 4th slowed the car too much. I was pretty good at 14 (where I passed Franco), but in this hot lap video I didn't nail it. Too far right and didn't get going in 3rd early enough. 16-17 was another combo I didn't perfect.

In the formula cars, never lift.

The same holds true for the MX-5 cars, except the rear starts feeling really light as you top out at T9. So instead of holding to the correct line, you end up a couple of feet to the left. Well, at least, I did. :)

T10 had me freaked. It is a l-o-n-g way down on either side. From what I remember Peter telling me, you don't want too much of an early apex, but you also what to nail the track out because the downhill to T11 in a MX-5 is pretty cool. Also judging T11 was tricky for me. It can take a lot of speed, but you don't want to overcook the Oak Tree.

Roger that on staying too far right on T14. I ended up doing some ag work once. :)

The whole 15-16-17 tango was the hardest for me to get. Will and Peter did their best to help me out, but some folks just can't be saved. By the time I got to T16, the MX-5 car would be feeling a bit loose, and I would blow the dive bomb into T17, which is critical in a MX-5 car. But once I started going faster into T14 but slower into T16 (if that makes any sense), the dosey doe around T17 became a hoot.

    Damn, I wanna go back!

    Dale

    PS Which track is next?

NJ in a couple weeks. Maybe not the history of these other tracks, but really cool being support race for Grand Am pro.

oh I forgot, Maranelloman was instructing at VIR! thought I recognized him on Monday, but couldn't believe it. then in the drivers meeting Tuesday morning he was standing by me and I was like "David!" and he's like "Rob!?!". He came by the trailers later and we talked, all he is doing now is instructing. Still lives in Austin.

Cool! I remember his critique of your lap at TWS a long time ago. As I recall, you were not that impressed. :)

But I'm glad to hear he is doing well. I ran into him coaching a Porsche guy at TWS about a year ago. You know, it is too bad when Internet personalities ruin a good thing. He and Art actually had more in common than not!

I don't remember that, but wouldn't surprise me as much as we bumped heads. I remember when I did Laguna Seca in 2004 FCA magazine or another took picture of me in the corkscrew and Dave got on me for missing the apex by 5 feet! Well, they had taken that picture in the warmdown lap! :)

Back around the time I had been club racing for 5 years and already about 75 races experience. I think he had just been instructing DE's with PCA and hadn't club raced except with PCA. Later on after he left FerrariChat he raced Grand Am Koni for awhile and if I didn't respect his skills then I certainly do now. Remember I was only 26 when starting FerrariChat, young and dumb sometimes. ;)
