I know there have been a few World Cup threads in other categories but I thought it would be good to start a thread here in Off Topic.

Who does everyone think is going to win? Do you think the US can make it out of their group? I hope so but it will be tough.

Obviously Brazil will be solid. I also think Italy, Spain and England should all be very good too. I am excitied to watch a ton of games. All of the games are being televised in High Definition here in the states. My problem is I do not have ESPN 2 HD so I will miss a few of the early games in HD.

I am hoping the US does well but I really don't think they will contend. After that I will be cheering for Italy and England.

its the low scoring that does it for me everytime.....'course baseball and hockey aren't always the highest scoring sports either....
It might also be generational combined with location (US). in my day NO ONE played soccer; it was baseball, basketball and football, period.

Germany vs Costa rica was a 4 to 2 game. Or a 28 to 14 game of football. Football is only high scoring because they multiply by 7.

    But anyway..

    Woot, Go Deutschland Uberallies!

Officially couldn't care less. A bunch of guys running around on a field kicking a ball. Effects my life in absolutely no way whatsoever. Same thing with football and baseball and basketball, hockey,....water polo,....curling,...etc.
At least an interest in automobiles and automotive sports is usually accompanied by some sort of technical interest that can be usefull in ones own life, such as car repair. Knowing how to kick a ball around a cow pasture is pretty worthless on a job application unless you're that one in a million guy like Pele or Michael Jordan.

Not completely true but I do hear your point. Being a sports fan or one who likes to play sports could help you in an interview especially if the person interviewing you has similar interests.

Ahhhhh,......no. I saw a news magazine story one time that was discussing the profile of a typical sports fan. It indicated that most professional, educated people were not big sports fans. Mainly because they were the type of people that did not sit around waiting for somebody to entertain them. They were go getters. They seek out their own entertainment. That's why they are so successful. Most doctors and lawyers and stockbrockers aren't sitting around on their sofa, swilling beer and watching football on the weekends. They are riding around in their Ferraris, or boating on the lake at their summer cabin, or golfing at the country club, etc. While I'm sure there are plenty of sports fans among the wealthy jet set, I believe the basic idea of their profiling is true. Rednecks swill brew and lament that they are behind on their car payment while they watch football. Stock brokers cruise on their yacht.
(of course I'm just a poor boy, but I still don't care much about sports.)

Normally I agree. I make exceptions for the 'it comes once in 4 years' style of sports. Like the Olympics, the World Cup, the Baseball World Classic if they ever do another. Most 'standard' games don't hold my interest. Though I tend to watch some of the playoffs and the championship for basketball.

Do you know how much training is involved with football? How much shape you have to be in to run up and down for 90 minutes. It is more than kicking a ball around a field.

I'll watch the championships of just about any sport. Including baseball. I can not however watch a live baseball game as it puts me to sleep every time. Personally I find soccer to be a true World Champion sport outside of Olympic basketball and hockey, the latter still being a cold weather region sport. The world competes, the best go at it every four years, one team/country wins.

Other than that I don't go out of my way to watch sports on TV. Football has become an absolute drag for me to watch. With all the injuries and short careers I just don't see the point anymore. The last few years it seems the sport is just there for the constant breaks so that advertisers can fit their commercials in.

You will never convince those that don't have an open mind or have played the game the soccer players are more pure athletes than american football. I have this arguement all the time and if they don't have some 300 pound ape run 6 feet then take a break and discuss how to do it again it isn't a sport. Then, wait a minute, the other team has the ball, hold on while we have the defense come onto the field. Because the same people on offense surely can't figure out how to defend too. You'll never win this arguement because you can't have a battle of wits with an unarmed person. World Cup T.V. coverage sucks and the casual observer can't just stumble on a game and get interested. That being said I can't stand to watch most sports, I would much rather be doing than watching.
