Valentino Rossi says he is in discussions with Ferrari about getting another Formula One test with them once the season is finished.

The Italian said after clinching this year's MotoGP crown that he would like to test an F1 car again, although he thought the chances were slim now that he has committed his future to motorbikes.

However, speaking in Valencia ahead of the final round of the MotoGP season, Rossi revealed that he could be in the car later this year.

"We are working on it, it can happen," said Rossi, who contemplated a switch to F1 in 2006 following several tests for Ferrari. "However, we don't know yet whether we will and on what day. We'll know something after the end of the F1 championship on November 2."

Rossi has made it clear that even if he does test then it will only be for his personal pleasure - and that there is no consideration being given to a future chance in F1.

"Yes, it's just for fun," he said. "I'm happy if they let me try it again, because I miss it a bit. However there's no other ambition, because I signed a contract for two more years for Yamaha. It will just be for passion and I think Valentino Rossi with Ferrari is fun for Italy."

When asked for his feelings on who he thinks will win the F1 title, Rossi said: "Well, I'm a Ferrari fan so I hope (Felipe) Massa wins. However, I honestly think (Lewis) Hamilton will win, in the sense that he has a seven-point advantage. So he's the favourite."

    Yeah....why the "oh no"?

Rossi's committed to MotoGP I believe through 2010. I personally don't want to see him make the jump to F1 simply because I wouldn't get to see him on a bike. He is a G*d on a bike, I say he is a better rider than Schumey was a driver. Also, MotoGP trounces F1 in terms of excitement.

F1 could use Rossi's personality... but, sounds like this is just a test and he'll be old by the time Yamaha contract is up. Fun to imagine though! He'd make the races much more fun.

Rossi would be great for F1 and for Ferrari. He's a character, and like Kidzan said, He's God on a motorcycle.

Rossi is an excellent MotoGP driver, but when he tried out with Ferrari the first time, about two years ago, all he did was 180´s. The Italian press took the entire proposition as a publicity stunt. I believe it was, and still is.

If Ferrari is going to find a driver that would be a future WDC, it isn´t Rossi. It will be someone coming out of F3, or another four wheel educational series.

Really? I remember he did some very impressive laps in Fiorano, not THAT far away from Schumi's times...

Yep thats how I remembered it.

The closest comparison for Rossi was with Michael Schumacher’s 2006 Ferrari team-mate, Felipe Massa, who was also driving the F2004 car - but fitted with the new unlimited V8 engine. Rossi was one second behind Felipe.

As an undoubted rookie to the Formula 1 grid, this has to be one of the best performances by a motorcyclist since John Surtees - who switched disciplines in 1960. On the final times shown below, Rossi is ahead of already very experienced drivers who have been in the sport for many years, and driving a much under-performing car at that.

IF Rossi wanted to race F1, and IF Ferrari (or even Toro Rosso) wanted him, I'm pretty sure he could get out of the Yamaha contract.

IMO, Rossi doesn't really want to race F1, and like he says this is just for fun if it happens. His chance was three years ago, he is too old to switch now, much less two years from now after his Yamaha contract expires.

This 'test' should be more aptly phrased a 'joyride'. They're not gonna test him. He just wants to take a spin.

Agree. Rossi should buy an old Ferrari F1 and join the Corse Clienti programme.

A little off topic but this year I was the most impressed by Dovisioso. I'm curious how he will do next year on the factory Honda.

Even if Lorenzo came into the series with more fanfare and initially did better with poles and a win early in the season, Dovi rode better in the second half of the season. He may end up also having a better MotoGP career if Lorenzo cannot stop crashing. He had another one in testing yesterday. Your body can only take so many...

If Rossi decides to drive, he will be competitve. There is no way he'll do a phoo phoo series. Dovisioso is going to be good, but frankly, the cream of the field are Rossi and Stoner. They are consistently about a half second quicker than anyone else. If they get away together, they leave. At Valencia, Rossi started 13th, and worked his way up to 3rd, no easy feat with that level of competition. Dovisioso had a full on works bikes for the last 6, 7 races, when it had been decided that they were going to let Hayden go. Indeed JiR team will get full works bikes for next year, including the air driven valve unit. Spies was negotiating with them for that ride, and it was offered to him, but they couldn't come up with enough money to make it work for him, so he signed with Yamaha for WSB for 09.

If Ferrari wants to dominate now they should pick up Alonso. Shackle him with clauses.
Vettle down the road or shocker; Nico Rosberg. He's served his time with Williams.
This Rossi stuff is more free advertising.

Rossi has said that he just wants to have some fun, no need to get in a tizzy guys.
He is also going to take part in Rally GB in a Ford, also just for fun. He is just doing this now because he won his Championship.
He did do this the past few seasons because he had work to do, getting his title back. This is his way of kicking back.

Publicity Stunt my @ss! WTF! OH NO NOT AGAIN!!! Someone is jealous.

I think it is more of a Fiat Sponsor perk.

"Hey Luca! Can I drive the F1 car at the Fiorano Test Track after the end of the season?"

Here here would turn down a joyride in a Ferrari F1 car?????? I sure as Hell wouldn't. Whether it be Valentino or just some schmuck. Anyone would take that opportunity if it was in front of 'em.

Let the guy go have his fun! He deserves it after winning the Champioship again.
