So, I went down to NC last week to check out a couple of 348s (a '93 Speciale and a '92 TS). The '93 was a bit looser that I liked, and even tended to "shimmy" a bit at speed, which made me a bit nervous. It was in decent shape, but had a bit more wear than I would have liked. All in all, I nice car, but in need of some tightening.

The '92 was basically a brand new car. It had 6,500 miles on it and was in near perfect cosmetic condition. It was VERY tight, and held the road very well. It was dog slow though (compared to the '93, which had an Ansa and different gearing), but I think that might change with some mileage. On the downside, it has no receipts other than the 30K service which was done less than a year and under 500 miles ago, and they want about $10k too much for the car.

To add to the fun, I had planned on flying down in back in the same day, only spending about 5 hours in NC, but due to the storms that were happening up here, I spent 7 hours in the Greensboro airport, only to have all the flight s cancelled, and ended up spending the night in the lovely airport Marriot. Fun!

Anyway, despite my incredible desire to own one of these great cars, I decided to pass. I just can't pay that much for a 348, no matter how good the condition. SO, no F-car for me yet guys, I hope I will not be taunted and shunned as a leper and stoned with very small rocks.

    The search continues....

patience will lead you to the right car, don't worry they are out there. BTW only having a receipt for the 30k seems a little suspicious - was it hand written on a memo pad :)

No, but I have looke at their web site a bit, and nothing was there (for me) at last check.

Ikeep thinking about that '92 though. Part of me is starting to think that it might be worth a bit more than the average 348 just for the condition of the car. The guys at Sport Auto tell me they can get whatever records I need (it was serviced at a dealer), besides, with so little mileage, it would'nt have many records to begin with. Their arguement is that the lowmileage is moot, as both they and the shop who did the Major have been throught the car, and have found nothing wrong with it. They say they have 65.5 in it, and want 38.5.

NADA says high retail price on the 348 is about 59K, FML says average asking price is about 56K. I think I would offer 63K max fo rthis car.

on the OTHER hand, the wife, it seems, is with child, so this may not be the best idea anyway.

Keep the faith. I almost flew down to NC (Italia) in March to see a 355 but it was gone before I could plan the trip. I instead I traded a PCab4Tip at MillerMotorCar, Greenwich up to a one owner triple black 94 348Spider with 10.5K on it. After considering trade and with a Powertrain Plus one year warranty I effectively paid about 70K, about in line with FML back in April for a premium car. I think you are right to bid lower than aksed a bit for 92 but , low mileage really does count a lot with these cars and be sure to factor in any needed service beyond the 30K such as tires, alignment, cats etc. and the like which can easily add up to the equivalent cost of a major. If the car needs absolutely nothing done to it, that is worth seveal K in its own right. There was a thread last month started by Cavallino that stated that prices of 348s were firming at auction. After driving my 348 for two months and 1,000 K miles later including the fabulous ROE, I think a well sorted out low mileage 348s consitute a bargain exotic and may ba approaching the classic Ferrari 12-15 nadir point after which there is a decent chance of appreciation and at least price stability. There just can not be many 348s with less than 10K miles. Good luck.

I assume you mean $68.5K. I agree with vinnycar that premium cars deserve premium prices. Low mileage + major done = premium car. That being said, there should be ample wiggle room below the $68.5 being quoted. Heck maybe even below the $65.5 they are supposedly in it for. And remember, there are other ways to benefit than just getting a discount on asking price.

As you well recognize, this captures the "average" car. Something as simple as plus / minus a major can skew the needle many thousands of dollars. See point #1.

First, congratulations. But second, there will always be "another reason" to defer a Ferrari purchase. My (humble) advice: Life is short. Get the Ferrari.

Good luck with your search (should you choose to continue).

Heh, thanks, I concur, there will always be a reason not to do it, and life is short. I do find it ironic that the moment I get the balls to buy an F-car, the balls start to actually work!

Thanks for all the thoughts and advice guys, I appreciate it.
