So my 355 had the oil level right on the minimum line
Measured after long run with hot oil and car idling

Handbook said 2 litres needed to bring up to max line...i put in 1.75 litres

After next run oil was foaming ....there was too much oil...maybe the crank was whipping up the excess oil in the pan and putting air in it.

I removed about .75 litres...now the level is at the max line and no foaming

So it seems that 1 litre is needed to bring oil level from min to max NOT 2 litres.

Anyone know why the book states 2 litres???

There should never be excess oil in the pan, especially enough to get whipped up by the crankshaft. I believe there are 2 scavenge stages to keep the dry sump -dry-.

from your observations, I would make the same conclusions: I tend to only add 1litre and adjust from there. Too much oil is not a good thing. It would be best at the min mark or about with proper warm up to just add 3/4-1 or maybe even only 1/2-3/4 then check again after a period of 'driving'. But can do so in the garage with proper warm up, I just like the factor of all in the mix after truly driving the car.

Ensure you are checking the motor after a long drive- i.e. the oil up to as hot as it is going to go that day...aim to keep the level at that point between the min and max- this way if you drive on a hotter day/it gets hotter it's not overfilled. The difference in oil level between cold, warm and hot is noticeable. I check it with the motor running, despite the owner's manual I believe saying it can be done running or just after shut off. I've checked all my 911s and former 360 this way- it's a bit of a pain due to the shear heat of the motor (at least with the ferraris), but it's the most accurate way to check it. I wish we had a level gauge like the air cooled 911s- you would look at the gauge after the car idled for a few seconds (say even at a red light) and I found the gauge to be pretty accurate when manually checking the dip stick on all 3 911s I had...wish the 355/360 had the same!

The oil foaming is pretty common- just try to keep it below the max line.

I always check 355 oil level after long hard drive with motor idling.

Fact is the handbook gives wrong info

Difference between min and max on the dipstick is nowhere near 2 litres...more like .75
Pathetic written info yet again from our friends at the factory

I have found adding approximately 1/2 liter (or just a little more) seems to bring the level to the 3/4 point.
Ideally you should strive for the mid mark on the dip stick with a fully hot motor.

Anyone know why the factory recommends to check with the car turned off? I thought all dry sumps are supposed to be checked while running at idle after about 30 seconds or so, level ground.

not sure why the manual recommends what it does.
having checked the oil level both ways.....hot motor off or at idle......& found no difference in the readings......now I only check at idle.

I put that in his head because of past experience with overfilled domestic engines. It was just a thought.

    Yes you did

Why does the handbook state 2 litres?
