I am finding a thin mist of oil on the inboard sice of the oil filler "box" onto which the cap screws. My first guess is that the seal has failed although inspection and cleaning dont indicate this. I think the seal can be replaced but since this is a screw down application I am also wondering if there is any valving or vent designed into the cap. Anyone else experienced this type of problem.

BTW the mist forms whether the oil level is 2cms over full or 2 cms under full.

If it's a "mist" perhaps it could be a loose/cracked crankcase vent hose going from the motor over to the oil tank? Is the amount of oil "leaking" sufficient to actually drip onto the garage floor, or just dampen the side of the oil tank? You say it's the "inboard" side of the tank...or the right side as your facing towards the front of the car? Look all the hoses and clamps over and tighten if needed. Perhaps a more detailed investigation is needed.

You have the exact position, there is no oil on the other side of the tank. Your suggestions on clamps and hoses are good ones and I will look at these. Its not an easily reached spot to get sight of without putting it on jacks or ramps. And No - so far no evidence of oil on anything else like the crankcase opposite the tank, the plug covers, fuel rail etc.

Someone mentioned this last week on here somewhere. They were looking at purchasing a TR that had the oil mist condition and they were asking if it was normal. Someone replied that it may be common on cars not driven far enough to warm them up fully. Mine is very clean but I drive a minimum of an hour each time I take it out. It takes it about 30 minutes to warm up the oil guage completely. You may want to search and see if you can find the other post for more information.

I do the same - never start the car without getting everything up to temperature. I drive it regularly to work (highways) and other than the odd wash which requires a start and shut down never shunt it around. I will ook for that oil mist thread though - thanks
