Something just happened during an oil change on my 400i. When changing the oil filters, the front filter came off normally and I caught the usual 3 drops from the filter with a paper towel. When removing the rear filter, a LOT of oil came spilling out. The filter was the correct filter (Fram) with the stand-pipe. I have changed oil on this very car several times and this has never happened before. Any thoughts?

This is an indication that the anti-drainback valve inside the filter that "a LOT of oil came spilling out" from wasn't properly closed (and the other one was OK). Here's a jpeg of a "bad" anti-drainback valve (which is just a flap of rubber that should seal against the steel plate when pressurized oil isn't entering the circle of holes) stuck in the open position inside a Fram PH2804-1:

Steve, Thanks for the info. I had hoped it was the filter. You have put my mind at ease

No trouble. The Baldwin's anti-drainback valve is the same, rather unsophisticated technology, but, since you are in the US, you should be using the Baldwin B253 ;)

+1. Baldwin and UFI are the only filters to use in place of the Fram PH2804-1. The Fram is not worth risking your engine over. Does anyone still have the jpegs of the Frams used on the 328 that collapsed around the standpipe and lost complete oil pressure? Scary stuff.
