Last time I checked my oil, I checked it cold like an idiot and I believe I overfilled the engine with oil. Im due for an oil change anyways, so I figured I would just dump out the oil reseroir and do an oil change.

Now in the manual, it says to run the car to get the oil up to temperature before draining. How important is this step? I don't want to run the car and risk damaging the engine.

It's good that you are being cautious.

I'd suggest that you just drain a quart or two (if that's how much you added after checking the level with the engine cold), then warm up the engine for a few minutes, then do a normal oil change, and refill with the amount specified in the manual.
