Doing some work on my 550 and just changed the oil and filters, using 5/40. The front is still up on jack stands. I drained out 12 quarts of oil (measured) and put twelve back in. I then checked the oil dip stick and it shows that the oil level is way high - way over max (it measured a little low before I drained the old oil - cold). I've never seen this after doing earlier oil changes. I've not cranked the engine since the change. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks, I'm aware of the that procedure - but I had also read somewhere (can't find it now) where it is recommended to monitor the oil level as you are filling the system using the dipstick - which frankly I did not do as I measured what I took out instead. Just easier to ask if what I'm seeing is normal verses doing something bad to the engine.

Did you drain both the tank and the oil pan?

Might be overfilled. Tough to tell now since they all seem to have slightly different capacities. Usual way to do a fill is put in 10 quarts, warm up, and sneak up on the oil level a bit at a time.

If nervous, and overfilling will make a real mess, get a turkey baster and take some out.

it happened to my 456 also, but if you do it slow run the engine a bit, everything should be work out. make sure you drain 2 plugs.
