Welcome to FChat, and congrats on the acquisition of the gorgeous 355 GTS :)

    Opinions vary between these two:

    1) kill the engine, and check the level immediately after

    2) check the level while the engine is running

    I prefer method one.

Let the engine warm up for a few minutes, it will have good oil pressure at idle.......turn off the ignition, check the dry sump immediately......works great and is quite accurate.

    Good luck,

Make sure the oil is above 160dF and water temp is above 185dF
Open engine bay lid with engine runninig
    Stop engine with door open
Get out of drivers seat, walk around to the Dry sump and unscrew it
Look at the oil level on the dip stick.

For an accurate reading you have between 30 seconds and 1 minute to perform all of the above with factory 10W-40 oil.

I did some searches on this but couldn't find a good answer. Is it OK to be slightly over filled? Say about 1/4 inch above the full line?

I don't have an answer based on experience but I've heard that overfilling these dumps can throw engine codes and result in slow down lights. I could be totally wrong though, I may have received bad information.

That's a good point, the cap is too hot to touch with a bare hand after a drive.

    Not really.

In a dry sump, you want the oil level to be right dab in the middle of the dip stick, neither high nor low is best. If the oil gets too high the car will suck oil into the intakes via the breather lines. If the oil gets too low the oil pressure will surge up and down.
