The long saga of having my timing chain and tensioner continues. Car was up and running but blew a hole in the top oil cooler hose on way home. There is a lot more to story but I want to get to the point.

My car is a 400i auto. The oil cooler connections are on the left side of the cooler. The right side of the oil cooler is flush against the transmission cooler with its connections on the right side. All of the part diagrams show the oil cooler outlets on the right side. How is your car set up and indicate auto or 5-speed?

Because of the different connection set up my hoses have very different end connections that ones on TAV 16. My top hose starts at cooler with about a 120 degree turn to head back to the right side of car and then a 90 degree bend at motor side connections. Does anyone have this same set up?

I have found several on line per TAV 16 for sale from the usual suppliers which may be NOS but it would get me back on the road if it actually fits.

Has anyone had these hoses 'made from scratch' or had someone reuse the end fittings and replace the hoses? If so, post contact info.

Thanks for pics; it is the same set up as mine.

I have learned since my first post that the end fittings are in fact threaded into the hose! That means there is some leeway into alignment. I have paint marked mine and will now be looking for a shop to do a much easier job than I thought.

I had my hoses rebuilt in March. The cost was a bit more than $200. This was quite a bit less than the $500/hose price you'll see here and there on the web. My vendor was Specialized Automotive Systems, 1366 Doolittle Dr, San Leandro, CA 94577, (510) 569-9870. They used the existing fittings on new braided steel hoses.

The top hose requires that the fittings be "clocked" exactly right, so that they will line up with their mates on the engine block and on the oil cooler. The shop installed the fittings into the hoses, without crimping, and I had to pick up the hose and mock it up in place and tape the fittings in position with duct tape. Then I returned the hose to the shop for the crimping. The bottom hose does not require this treatment because the fitting at the engine is straight in, and "clocking" doesn't matter.

On my car the fitting at the top of the cooler was stuck so tightly that I had to remove the cooler with the hose attached and unscrew it with the cooler out of the car. This required removing the puller fan and the upper and lower radiator hoses. You'll need some very large spanners -- 30 mm or so -- to handle these the nuts. Or you can use, as I did, two large adjustable crescent wrenches. I advise to use two, because torquing on the nut against the cooler, rather than using a wrench to hold the cooler, could destroy it.

The installation of the rebuilt hoses was also very challenging. These fat, short hoses with braided stainless sheathing are not very flexible. Be sure to take lots of pictures (which I did not do, adding an extra weekend, at least, to this job).

When I realized that the end fittings were threaded onto the hoses I refitted them into the car and paint marked both ends, so I won't have to go through the two step process. There is a little wiggle room since both ends will rotate a bit on the their respective fittings. I happened to have a 1 1/4" open end which did the trick; since the cooler is on rubber mounts I blocked the cooler against the radiator with a thin bit of wood and it came undone easily.

Thanks for the contact; I have some East Coast places I'll try first but that is a good backup. Did they use the threads for the end fittings or eventually crimp them. It is amazing that the seal is the threads on the original ones but it looks like thread are rubber coated for bottom turns of threads; not sure of that or if hose actually gets threaded by the fitting being in there.

I am not sure how to answer that. With respect to the upper hose, I think my shop cut off the original fittings and welded them to some new material. (All I really know for sure is I took two oily old hoses to the shop and got two new clean ones back.)

My top hose was remade using my end fittings, cut and welded to new hose fittings. They found a way to avoid having to "clock" them by using a flare fitting connected to the 120 degree bend end piece so it could be fitted and tightened in place. You will see this in the pics. Job was done by Pirtek which is a national chain doing all kinds of industrial hoses. They used a teflon / SS braided hose rated at 450 F and 2000 psig (100STH hose).

Fired car up this morning and all is good. I'll replace lower hose as part of my 2014/15 R&R.

All good info. Thanks for posting. It might be a good idea to go ahead and change these before one of them springs a leak!
