Oil Cooler / Line - Nut Size?

    I think I've developed an oil leak from the top hose on the oil cooler. To further investigate, I want to remove it - but I don't have a wrench that will fit either the hose connector nut nor the smaller "grab it here so you don't damage it" nut on the cooler. And don't want to do my regular routine of "make 3 trips to the store until I find the right size of wrench."

    Hose looks stock. Anyone know these 2 nut sizes? Thanks. :)

    I (well, the car) have a similar leak... I'm sorry I don't know the size, but I'm interested in what you find. They are super tight on my car...

    33 or 34 will work. Check Amazon for single wrenches to buy. It's huge, don't panic when you see it.

    I've been reading up on this all night ... it seems the solutions to removing the nuts vary from "twist off" to "use a torch" to "had to cut it off with a grinder". I'm going to start with hoping a pair of wrenches works. ;)

    And just when I thought I was about to be finished with leaky leaks... another $300 hose. :mad: Gah. And Arg.

    Thanks Tim. I *think* they may be in the 27-30mm range, but I haven't pulled the wheel/liner yet so can't get a caliper on them. EDIT: Just saw your size confirmation after I posted this. Thanks again!

    those are delicate and I would hit it with some heat to loosen up everything up in case it is too tight....

    Good advice, definitely. I know the oil cooler is hell expensive, so don't want to screw it up too.

    I did mine from above. Was fairly easy. Cooler or bolt leak? I have a resource for a cooler repair if you need it.

    At the moment I think it's the hose itself; I'm feeling some oil on the underside of the rubber hose, and it's dripped onto the air intake housing (which I removed/cleaned 100% last month, so I know it's new oil on it.) Also seeing dark wet spots under it on the frame. I suppose it's possible the cooler itself is also leaking, but since the top hose is wet I'm starting there...

    I don't know it is not the hose /cooler's fittings for certain yet, but there's no "wet drippy" on the underside of the 2 brass connecting nuts. So hoping it's downstream of the nuts themselves.

    Flats on oil radiator hose are 32mm; flats on oil radiator itself are 30mm.

    I had to replace my oil radiator (2013) and my oil radiator hoses (2015). The unions on the oil radiator were hecka tight, but they did come off without spalling. I did not heat or hit; just cranked with the wrenches. Remove the oil cooler from its mounting tabs so that you don’t stress the tabs while pulling on the wrenches.

    Regarding the wrenches I used, I will reluctantly admit (because it is uncool) that I just bought and used a 15” adjustable wrench (“Crescent wrench”) as a second wrench since I so rarely need such a big spanner. The darn thing has been handy for lots of other projects too (e.g. home hot water heater replacement). I also own a 30mm/32mm combination spanner.

    Don't spend $300 on a hose. Find a local commercial/industrial hydraulic repair or hose shop and ask them to make you a new hose and re-use your fittings. There's a shop in Chicago that does it for locals for about $50; they specialize in repairing/replacing high-pressure washer and forklift hoses. Look near your airport and you're sure to find a similar outfit.

    Yep. You can have them made easily and economically. The backup nut on the cooler requires a slimline wrench to fit. Was discussed a while back on the GT4 here. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/posts/144670867/

    Normally I feel like I'm in a specialty-shop desert down here (plenty of lobbyists and burger joints though), but have found a local shop that may be exactly what I need. Going to drop by their place on Monday and see if they can rebuild it.

    Agree. I have a Park Tools HCW-7 32mm/30mm bicycle headset wrench.

    I bought this set at my local Harbor Freight and the worked well: https://www.harborfreight.com/15-piece-metric-service-wrench-set-93668.html. Additionally, (and I may have got this tip here somewhere) I mixed up the be anti-seize fluid ever (50% trans fluid & 50% Acetone) and soaked all the joints overnight. Mine popped right off.

    I have a source to completely redo the existing hoses using your original parts if anyone is interested.

    I have a couple, but I'm not a fan of crescents. I'll use one if I can't avoid it, but they're bulky and can slip or round a nut more easily than a correctly sized wrench.

    I do but it's harder to put a "persuader bar" on those. With these, a piece of half-inch pipe fits perfectly on the end.

    I had no luck getting them made. I had a local aviation specialist shop that cleaned and crack tested the cooler check into having the hoses replaced using the factory fittings. They said no problem but after several weeks and much back and forth on fitting sizes reported back that they could not find a hose shop that could do it. Ended up buying one from GT Car Parts and found they are branded from Superformance so will just go there for the second hose.

    I guess it depends on the shop. There's a place in Chicago called Bristol Hose - which services largely the O'Hare Airport industry - that will do it in 15minutes while you wait at the counter. Unfortunately, I don't think you can mail in stuff like this; you have to be there.

    ( I ended up cutting mine off with a dremel by slicing vertically down the nut till I could just see the thread & then prising it apart with a screwdriver)

    I live close enough to Tri Cities Hose in Livermore that has rebuilt any hoses I sent to them. Decent prices too.

    There is a shop in Seattle (Boeing stuff) that does hydraulics but I have not tried them.

    Good day All,

    With regards to the oil cooler hoses... I live in a City and area that eats, lives, and breathes big oil (well over 100+ oil related shops within 20 miles of me) and it was a challenge to find a shop that would make a hose that would last. I was told it had nothing to do with pressure, but that it was because of the operating temperature our oil circulates at ... and that our oil would contain fuel contaminants (gasoline, ethanol, etc via Cylinder blow by). I was only able to find one shop that had a hose that was suitable for our application. If you are able to find a shop that will make up a hose for you, have them double check and confirm the operating temp and its resistance to gas/ethanol, etc.

    In contrast, when I walked into Tri-Valley Hose (Livermore, CA), the guy behind the counter said, "Those are from a Ferrari," before I even said a word. They do them on a regular basis.
