I am changing oil in my "new" 575. The WSM states 75nm of torque for the two oil drain plugs (engine oil breather caps). As I was torquing these down, it seemed very high for the brass plugs so I stopped and thought I would ask what others use for a value if you use a torque wrench.

i don't see any wet-sump or dry-sump tank building enough pressure where 75nm of torque is required

hand tightening until snug is more than enough... all you have to do is feel the bolt bite into the crush washer a little.

If it weeps all you need to do is snug it up a touch as opposed to time-sert the tank/sump because you stripped the threads

That was my thinking as well. I dont need to strip the threads from either the cast alum pan or the brass plug with excessive torque. I will use the recommended torque for the filters but use judgement on the plugs and look for leaks.

John- That thread is a good reason for using 75 Nm or 55 lb-Ft. That is a large thread bolt on a crush washer.

i wouldn't use a torque wrench at all, the 21nm seems high for the aluminum pan & the filters too

i've go an E39 M5 that uses one of those filter housings that accepts replacement elements and it's a plastic cap on an aluminum housing (similar to the ones on 911 porsches). The cap is stamped 25nm with a protrusion to accept a 23+mm socket - it looks ridiculous - i've always tightened and un-tighten by hand and not once have i had a weeping housing-or-plug

550 or F12 i would do the same, tighten filters until they bottom out and stop on their own

i'll bow out since i have not had the chance to personally do a change on a 550/575 but i'm going to stick by not using a torque wrench on either filters or plugs (no i'm not one of those guys that swings on an ratchet to toque something) but looking at those plugs they don't look like they'd like to be torqued to 70+nm

Since when did "engine oil breather caps" and "drain plugs" mean the same thing?

    75nm comes close to 55lbs.

Sorry to say this but Ferrari manuals are crap to start with but one thing they were never meant to do is teach Auto Repair 101. Every single piece of information needs to be put to the smell test because so they are so full of disinformation.
No where in either the 550 or the 575 manual does it give torque specs for the oil drain plugs.

If you really need a manual to tell you how to tighten a drain plug you should strongly consider leaving the job to someone else.

I have never seen in my professional life a torque wrench used on a drain plug.

On the other hand any mechanic I saw installing a late model Ferrari filter without a torque wrench would be looking for a truck to get his tool box out of my shop before closing.

Otherwise known as I screwed up that one.

Should have remembered from changing my own oil on three Ferraris for 8 years or so. Not sure I even had a torque wrench back then.
