Does anyone know if K&N are OK oil filters and would you know the part number?
Not the best alternative for a 400i -- as the K&N lacks the internal standpipe of the Baldwin B253 (and the Fram PH2804-1, but the Fram has other problems) for an inverted mounting application. JMO -- try a search on "Baldwin standpipe" for more threads.
It shows on their site that it has the anti drainback valve? K&N HP-3001 - Oil Filters, Oil Filter Can you verify?

These are what I've used and where I get them: https://www.grainger.com/product/BALDWIN-FILTERS-Full-Flow-Oil-Filter-2KZG4?s_pp=false
Almost all modern oil filters have an anti-drainback valve (but the quality of construction varies) -- it's the anti-drainback valve working in conjunction with the internal standpipe that helps trap a larger volume of oil inside the oil filter case after engine shutoff for a longer time. The sketch in post #18 in this thread explains how it works: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/308-328/293732-using-k-n-hp-3001-oil-filter-308s.html It's not like using a more conventional oil filter without the internal standpipe will cause immediate failure, but, if the filters are about the same price, there's technical upside for using an oil filter with an internal standpipe on engines with gasket-end-down oil filter mounting. I believe, no internal standpipe.
Whats wrong with just using the OEM UFI Filters, readily available from Ricambi / local dealers / Eurospares / Ferrari UK etc etc. ? M
+1 Now that UFI has (correctly) improved the sealing o-ring area on the smaller F oil filter, I'd be happy with either Baldwin or UFI, and go with which on had the lower "cost + hassle-to-get" factor.
Ok, but that's a drop in the ocean in the overall cost of running a 4xx series car. I can get the OEM's for around $38 here, Baldwins are ~ $20 and hard to get. M
Actually around $15 now but still way less expensive than the UFIs, which I soured on after their sealing ring defect problems several years ago. Never heard a discouraging word about Baldwins and their cost advantage makes it an easy decision for me.
