I'm going to change my oil and oil filter tomorrow.I'm going to try Royal Purple 20w50.I plan to take it for a drive to warm it up then let it drain overnight.I was wondering if there is anything I can use to flush out the old oil completely after it has been drained.Any one got any suggestions or should I not worry about it?Thanks in advance
    PS:Car is a 308GT4

Don't really recommend a "flush. What you're doing sounds fine. If the customer asks us to do that as part of the change in oil brands or weights, we get the oil hot, drain overnight, fill with desired new, run for a short inerval, drain again and fill. That's the safest way. Most people do not go to that trouble and, IMO, don't need to...

I agree. If you regularly change your oil within time / mileage you wouldn’t need a “flush”.

And you really don't need to drain it overnight either. If you warm the oil up, pull the drain plug and let it drain for an hour, you're getting out 99.9% of what will come out if you leave it sit for a week. You would be far better off doing what was suggested -- drain the engine, refill with fresh oil, run the motor for 15 or 20 min., and then drain it again. Far more important than letting the engine sit overnight is making sure that the engine is level when you drain it. If you jack the rear end up too high, you'll have a pool of oil that won't drain out, no matter how long you let it sit. And if you are changing your oil regularly and if you don't have super-dirty oil, the small amount of contaminants that remain are irrelevant, IMHO.

I believe a 308GT/4 calls for 10w50, which is hard to find. I would go with Castrol TWS 10w60 which will be thinner for cold start-up...

Your 308 Dino probably has an oil cooler which will retain oil even when the sump is drained. So it wouldn't make any sense to flush the engine without disconnecting an oil line to the cooler and draining it, too. My 328 holds 11 quarts but only 9 drain out of the sump. Since I never let the oil get too old or dirty, I don't bother with the cooler and just drain the sump, change the filter, and add 9 new quarts of oil.

Regarding the weight of the oil, I second aehaas' recommendation of a lighter synthetic 40-weight. I use Mobil 1 0W-40, too.

    Cheers, Mark
