    Six months ago I retorqed my 400I head bolts( many were loose) in hopes it would solve my oil in water issue, 2,000 miles later I am happy to report no more oil in water!

    Thanks for the best wishes. But the main reason I posted this is to remind owners how important services are. Ferrari recomends every 12,000 miles to retorque head bolts, I think that is maybe to conservitive, I am not a Ferrrai expert but have alot of experince with a varity of other engines and when I retorqued my head bolts it seems to me it had not been done in alot longer than that, I was getting alomst a quater turn on alot of the bolts (really nuts, since has studs). I really am impressed with the build quality of these cars and feel confident it will last along time if maintaned properly. My wife and I have used it for about a year now as the family car, to replace a Dodge van. Hope for many more.

    Tighten box nuts to the torque of 50Nm(5 kgm) according to the sequence listed below, finally tighten them to 100Nm(10 kgm)

    2 rows of 7 each:
    Inside row(from left to right)= 14, 10,6, 2, 3, 7, 11
    Outside row (" " " " )= 13, 9, 5, 1, 4, 8, 12

    You're basically starting in the center and working towards the ends of the heads.

    100Nm=73.7561 ft.lbs.

    Yes, still 46153 since 1998 but mileage now is 35,000. Can't say that I'm proud of only 13,000 miles over 9 years but I'm trying!

    Don't worry @ the mileage thing, 1500mi/yr is not bad. It becomes tough keeping all cars exercised as you accumulate more, if cars are your gig, fine; otherwise.......
    Mine is an '84 #46009, I'll post better pix of the ID plate (engine bay) later, & I must look further into first/last # of each Ferrari year.

    I don't have the serial numbers broken out by year, although I could probably get fairly close by looking at the lists that Dave Stacey and I have compiled over the years.

    One of the difficulties is understanding the confusion that sometimes is created by the U.S. model year designation protocol that assigns a model year that might be different than the actual production year. For example, my 46153 as far as I can tell was produced probably sometime around March or April of 1983 and yet my registration shows it as a 1984 model. Since my 400i actually first entered the U.S. on August 23, 1983 and didn't receive its DOT and EPA exemption certificates until May 1984, I guess might be two reasons that the 1984 model year label was applied.

    Since your serial number is even earlier than mine, I would guess that the same thing has been applied in calling it a 1984. My log for instance shows your car as a 1983.

    Anyhoo, I do have beginning and ending serial numbers of the broader models:

    400: 501 cars from 19353 to 29051 (according to Ferrari Market Letter, Cavallino says last 400 was 28261).

    400i: 1,308 cars from 27025 to 55523 in February 1985

    412: 576 cars from 58629 (Cavallino says 56275) to 82001 (Cavallino says last 412 was 82153)

    Attached some pix of ID plate, could these somehow be duplicated by a US Ferrari dealer and swapped out? I would also think FML & Cav. would have on 'in' w/Ferrari to nail down the exact #'s of start/finish of model years----maybe Stepney had a hand in this!
