Oil leak issue

Hi everybody,

In February I sent my F355 to the garage for a simple oil change, levels and brakes revisions, etc.

After two days I took the car and an oil leak appeared on my garage floor. I asked the mechanic about the question and he told me that maybe a bad cap oil sealing would be the problem. I sent back the car to the garage and the problem continued.. I sent back the car again and same result..

There is a difference between the last time and the previous ones: The oil leak has changed from the back of the car (usually the leak was in the middle of the border in the flat piece next to the engine) to the front (now is in the same piece but the opposite border). You can see the positions in the attached image (the red position is where is the leak now).

My mechanic is not an expert in Ferrari at all. He has only good will..

How is it possible this behaviour? Where the hell it comes from?

I no one else has any clever ideas, you can get a kit at any auto parts store that has a dye, special glasses, and a black light... make sure you get the dye for oil! Then, add the dye, go for a drive, come home, turn out the lights, put on the dorky glasses and flip on the black light and there should be a streak of dull phosphorescence showing the trail of the oil leak. It's not as bright as the dye for coolant leaks, but it's pretty visible.

 

Check around the Oil Filter. The local shop I use that also services a few other Ferrari's had a bad Oil Filter sent to them from Ferrari Dealer. It was not obvious that it was from the Filter but some how the Oil Filter was leaking Oil.

 

There are a few possibilities but the oil pressure sender (#72) is a common one. Gravity is your friend, follow the leak to the highest place.

You will want to ascertain what type of fluid is leaking. Especially the leak close to the front of the car. It is most likely brake fluid from over filling.

 

Hi, finally the oil leak wasn't that. After some months, disapeared by itself. My conclusion is that it was a consecuence of the oil change. Probably the quantity of oil exceeded the tank and, after some time, the liquid simply flowed to the bottom. That's all.

Unlikely it is an "overfilled tank". Dry sump systems do not work that way.

My guess is they drained the oil from the car, fitted the aero panels, THEN filled the oil and spilled some (alot?) in the process.

If the car was not level, but situated nose low, the spilled oil would run out of the seam you have circled in red. Drive it and the stuff would come out in the back including the area you circled in blue.

Hi Watson. Yes, some thing like that had happened. The excess of oil stayed in the bottom for a while. One day I started the car, run some meters, and a stream of liquid dropped from that point. After that moment, no more leaks...
