The 400i generally doesn't really leak much oil but, when it does, it is possibly from the rear engine main seal area or from one of the oil lines running to and from the oil cooler.

In the case of my car there were leaks pumping out a quart of oil in 500 miles or less. The oil got all over the back of the car and I assumed it was carbon coming from the exhaust pipes. Not so!

Some ace mechanic had adjusted the valve lash and, rather than spend the money for new gaskets (or make them), put the cam covers back on with blue Form-A-Gasket which failed. There are two circular plates covering the inboard cams, on their covers, aft. These were the source of the leaks. New paper gaskets fixed these leaks and the mess on the rear of the car.
