430 Oil level check

Firstly I do the annual maint myself for the past 15 years. (previously 360) Car goes in to Ferrari every 3 years for the major (excl trans) just to get the history up to date. I've never had a problem. The WSM says check the oil with the cap sitting on the filler neck up to temp and running. Is that with the tangs in the slots or with the tangs on the neck? Quite a difference.
Gearbox is easier to understand as the dipstick is threaded and it says resting on the filler neck.
I go tangs in the slots and halfway between low and full??
