Just did a 100 mile run in the TR. Did spend a fair amount of time above 5000 rpm, and a very short period at 110 mph (less than 1/4 mile) Balance of low rpm cruising.

This is the first 100 miles after a complete 30K service, which included 12 Quartz of SWEPCO oil.

I checked my oil approximately 3-5 minutes after returning, on level ground. Unscrewed the dip stick, cleaned it, re-entered it all the way BUT DID NOT SCREW IT DOWN at that point. Upon checking, I see the MINIMUM line on the oil.

Did I check it incorrectly? Should I have screwed the cap down? I can't imagine that 100 miles would cost a quart of oil on a solid engine. Or perhaps 12 quarts wasn't enough upon the refill?

I was told you could check with the engine running. Just put the dipstick in, screw the cap - and unscrew to check.

    Good luck.

Screwing the cap down or not only amounts to about 1/4 inch difference so that does not matter one way or the other. The important thing is to look at the oil temp gauge in the center console and make sure the oil temp is OVER 170. Then ck it within 30 seconds after turning the motor off.

    ANY other method is invalid.

You waited too long. Check it right after shutting it off and screw the cap down and you should be fine. Some oil consumption is normal for these cars over time.

Thanks. I think the issue was that I waited too long. I'll check it again tomorrow, or Monday when the rain clears enough for a decent drive. Figured I must have done something wrong. Seems like a TERRIFIC engine, and I wasn't seeing any smoke at any point, including, oddly, at start up. But then, I've been driving it a bit each day.

    Ditto.:)

In fact, I have everything ready so as soon as the motor is shut off I am unscrewing the oil cap with rag in hand.

I agree about the 170 oil temp, but i thought you have to check oil level while engine is idling ??? That is what Ferrari is saying, it's also described in the book like that. ?????

    In what book?

    In your 360 book yes.

    In a TR book no.

Even the later 360 book they changed their minds and have changed the procedure.

Dry sump motors have a return hose that sloshes the oil around in the tank making it difficult to impossible to accurately check the oil with the engine running depending on the model of car. In a Daytona for example the return hose sprays directly on the dipstick.
The situation is different for every car and so THAT cars manual or updated information for THAT car should be consulated for the correct procedure.

One size does not fit all.

    RTFM.

And for those that don't like Ferrari's way because Ferrari is obviously clueless, don't ***** when the car breaks.

    Yeah Brian,

sorry, i guess you are right. I thought he had a 360. So on a 02 360 Modena,
what do you believe is the right way to check the oil level ???
    Thanks for your input !!

Just checked. Still have the 88 TR. Looks like the rain has stopped, so I feel compelled to go see if I can get the oil warm enough to do my oil level check correctly. Pretty cool integral dipstick though. Aluminum?
