Hello to all, iv recently purchased a 488, first time owning a ferrari im quiet hands on in terms of mechanical experience or so i thought, car was sitting in my garage for few days iv come along to check engine oil not realising that dry sump needs to be started first run till optimal heat before checked, iv opened dip stick to find oil level very low iv filled it up with additional oil till level is correct on dip stick (5 litres) then iv started in went for a drive 15-20kms stopped and realised its pissing out oil from somewhere ( i believe intake manifold ). My question is once iv drained oil do i need to change anything else, will that additional 5 litres of oil done any damage somebody pleeeeeeaaaase ! Advice

You’re going to need to flatbed this thing to the dealership…

Needs the intake apparatus removing and cleaned + de greased . New air filter and probably a few other contaminated parts eg plugs etc .

Don’t drive it . Get the dealer to collect it .

If you have blown a few seals ( maybe / likely ? ) the engine removing and rebuilding .

Worst case senario excess oil when the car stops drips from the inlet box , starts to fill a cylinder causes a hydrolock which throws a rod . Hence don’t restart it !

I saw one out of the car at an Indy’s awaiting a new rod in bits , block saved and on a engine stand .
Enquiring what’s happened…..they told me the guy got 40 miles ( from a franchised dealer after a regular service ) Pulled up for a coffee at a service station on the motorway ( U.K. )
At the restart it rattled like hell and he got about 1 mile.
It’s had been overfilled . He showed me the air box and told me it was full of 3 L of oil ! Some of which hydrolocked a cylinder and bent a rod the first one the engine stoped .After a severer “rattle “.

Because he had fitted a sports aftermarket exhaust the said franchise dealer voided the power warranty. Technically they are correct ….although not directly related to the consequences of the overfill …..small print …..something about aftermarket parts voids the WHOLE warranty.

The owner was in the middle of legal action with the franchise . Cars was a Cali T so same motor as 488 .

    Indy was awaiting parts .

It’s at this point the Indy gave me a verbal lesion in checking the oil in a dry sump Ferrari . [ I have had dry sump cars before …. early air cooled 911 s and a F360 ] .
Was the first time I took my new to me 348 to him for adjustment of the gear linkages , which he did and it now changes beautifully.
That’s something else young kids @ franchise can’t do adjust shift linkages in older cars !

As an aside most modern cars esp German have Behr oil level sensors , so no dip stick as such . Just a electronic display ( after pressing a sequence of buttons on the dash ) .When I change oil in these I always measure exactly the volume that comes out .
Use this as a starting point to refill . Never go by the book .Use the book as a basic reference.
    Say a Porsche 982.2 handbook says 8.5 L ( inc filter ) and only 7.2 L is drained ……then I add 7 L or maybe 7.1L ……NEVER the book 8.5 L .
Adding extra after its warmed etc is easier than dealing with the overfill consequence’s.

Yes dry sumps on Ferrari need to be hot and either @ tick over or immediately after shut down .
Fortunately they have a dip stick a rare feature in modern cars ……albeit you need to learn how to use it .

    Hopefully you haven’t bent a rod …YET ! …..hence don’t start it once it s been sat .

You might think these guys are being overly dramatic and worrisome but to be honest, this is pretty much spot on advice. Flatbed it to the dealer. And don't start it again.
