My oil pressure gauge is not working. ('79 GTS)
    - brand new gauge
    - brand new oil pressure sender
    - power to gauge ok, as red red comes on pre-ignition and briefly stays on after start up.

Thanks in advance for any trouble shooting tips

Ground the wire at the oil filter housing that goes to/come from the wiring harness for the oil pressure transmitter. If the gauge reads "nothing", then you have a wiring problem with that lead. If the gauge reads full scale, then lilkely you have a real oil pressure problem. This can be easily verified with a mechanical oil presure gauge.

Know that the oil pressure warning light circuit and oil pressure gauge are two entirely separate circuits.

Warning light wires from engine to dash are grey with yellow stripes. Gauge wires from engine to dash are light blue. However there are connectors at each end where colors change again. Warning light sensor on engine is further toward the filter than the gauge sensor.

I disconnected harness wire (red) from oil pressure sending unit and grounded it. Generator light came on & then the fuse blew for all the gauges.

Then I disconnected the yellow lead from the oil pressure transmitter, grounded it & the red lite on the gauge came on, but the needle didn't move

As I mentioned above, that isn't the oil pressure sender but the oil warning sensor. Those two circuits are quite separate and unrelated.
    Please check the wiring diagrams.

Sounds to me like you've got the wrong wire connected to the oil pressure sending unit -- this wire should be HN (grey/black) in color. The R (red) wire might be the +12V line that is supposed to run the electrovalve that removes vacuum from the air intake box flap actuator to open it when the key is "on" (so grounding this red wire with the key "on" would naturally blow fuse #2). Is your air intake box flap system still intact, or might this red wire be available to be misused ;)?

You're probably OK here, but this wire, for the oil pressure warning light, should really be HG (grey/yellow) in color as Paul mentioned -- not the greatest contrast so maybe not so noticeable.

Actually, the oil pressure warning light system and the oil pressure gauge system use the same +12V power source for operation, but since you report that the warning light works, that confirms that this +12V is present for the pressure gauge operation (i.e., if both systems were dead, then this +12V power source would be suspect, but that's not your problem).

Sounds like you grounded a hot (+12V) wire there and blew the fuse at the box.

I'm no electrician but I'm guessing that if you've put in a new gauge, a new sender and you have power at the gauge with the ignition on then you have a grounding problem for the gauge. I don't know the color coding but often there's a common ground wire for several of the gauges but that may not be the case here (separate/dedicated ground).

I am an electrician and methinks he replaced the warning sensor, not the oil pressure sensor.

    Thanks Steve
The wire was not connected to the grey /black. corrected , the gauge now works
    cheers

Thanks for all the responses guys. After the engine out service was performed, seems we were colour blind on the connections. red looks like grey/black. LOL :D

I guess I have a spare oil pressure gauge & sending unit. Anyone interested ?

Glad to hear that you got it sorted out without any (unnecessary ;)) additional expense.
