    Hey everybody,

I have a question about the oil pump chain tensioner on my ’94 348. The car has done about 80.000 km / 50.000 mls. The next cam belt change is still a couple of years away.

I have seen some pictures of worn chain tensioner guides here and there. Since I have no records of the chain ramps ever having been replaced I am wondering if this is something that should be addressed sooner rather than later.

From my understanding it does not make much of a difference if the engine is in or out for this job – is that correct?

Last question: Is it fine to just replace the plastic guides or should I retrofit the 360 tensioner?

    Thanks!

    Andy

I did them when my engine was out previously. I have seen cars develop issues with them then needed to pull the engine. There is actually a TSB for it. I think Ricambi sells it as a kit.

There's actually two chain guides, only one is available which is the one for the oil pump drive, if you order one they will send you a 360 one anyway, the original one is NLA.
The other tensioner is for the timing control chain which is not available, you have to go aftermarket. I think one of the members here may have had some made....

But at 80,000kms both would be very worn. My car had done 48,000 when I did mine and it both were fairly worn.

You have to take the sump off to then take the front cover off to access them. Not difficult.

The oil pump chain guide is so noisy on these engines. Get under a 355 that's up to temp and running on a lift and it's shocking how loud the chain is dragging across the guide. If you listen to a 355 idling, you can hear it clear as day, even inside the car with the windows up. I wish there was a quieter design here.

Thanks you all - that is very helpful! What is the typical failure mode - Rattling Noise or connecting rod lying on the street?

Would you guys do it now or wait for the engine out (probably in about 3.000-5.000 km)?
