Does oil from the pump go first to the heat exchanger, then to the oil filter, before going to the engine rotating parts, cams, cylinders, crank then to the oil pan. Which port on the filter mounting assembly does the oil go out to the heat exchanger (top or bottom). It seems like a poor design having the oil filter inverted, any thoughts?

It goes first from the oil pump to the oil/water heat exchanger, then to the filter , crankshaft, camshafts ... see picture.
"poor Design" was optimized over lifetime: As it takes too long till the oil from the sump arrives at the cams (causing worn out cams after low mileage) , Ferrari made several modifications:
    a) on the cams itself with different grooves for better oil distribution
    b) with inner tube in the filter which eliminates it´s draining after engine stop.
This allowed to bring the oil from the filter quicker to the cams as before from the sump.

From that graphic, it seems if you wanted to prime an engine for first time start you could pour oil down the top heat exchanger oil hose, re-attach and spin it over with the plugs out.
