To the brothers, who is running what weight and type of motor oil in there 348?

Also I called Red Line yesterday and talked to there oil tech and asked him about all the trans oils and what he thought. On the phone about a hour. He said over and over again not to run the Superlight shockproof! No Doubt you should call the tech line and talk to them. I asked him about the condensation thing and it did not make sense to him. Again he said not to run the Superlight shockprook. (Sorry Pap). Hands down he said that the car should have the Redline's 75w90NS.

Redline 75W90NS. Shifts real smooth (er ... for a 348 that is).

Well, you should probably take the tech's advice as that's his specialty...but the Superlight Shockproof was the best shifting gear oil that I've ever used.

I'd run it again in a heartbeat, and in fact will be going back to it when I change my gear oil next year.

Pap and I can be the 348 test mules for the shockproof. If anything is going to go wrong with a 348 tranny using it, we'll find it first.

Bah, what does he know? :p:p
Seriously though, who is he and what does he REALLY know about the product? He could be a pimply faced teen that started working there last week. :D:D Anyone can read a label and praise to the lord about using it or not using. It all comes to experience with it I suppose. :)
As ND said, if the gearbox blows up (which I HIGHLY doubt ;)) then we will live and learn. But I dont really think so. You never know, maybe we are getting excessive synchro wear because of Shockproof oil. Maybe we really have to use NS oil..............but you get that.:eek:

Dino, You're the long-term 348 man! What sort of oil pressure do you see when cold (at idle and 4000 RPMs) with oil that heavy?

I barely know more than the price of oil per barrel, but after reading AEHaas' oil threads I've been going to lower and lower engine oil weights (e.g. 5w40 Redline instead of 10w40).

My wife's hemi V8 Durango takes 0w20 synthetic! That's so low that it freaks me out.

I'm sure that you need a heavier weight engine oil for the track, but for daily driving would you stick with 15w50?

I put the Redline 75wNS in my car with a 1% addition of the friction modifier, and guess what...

I've observed NO shifting improvement whatsoever. I read and I listened to all the praise of this product -- it almost made me believe that it would make the car shift like a normal car! For me, no improvement occurred.

    Engine oil is Mobil1 0w-40

I've used Redline's 5W30 motor oil in some Winter months, but it was so thin that I had barely any oil pressure showing on the gage at idle on hot Summer days. So my polite suggestion is to limit 5W30 use for colder months.

One last thing. Switch to Royal Purple motor oil. Car did run cooler. It ran cool enough to notice a small difference. Pap.....I am going YELLOW. How is she still shifting in the Out Back!!!

Recommended! In the meantime, what is your shifting style at those moments when you notice hard shifts?

For instance, do you lift the throttle while the clutch is depressed, or do you keep the throttle pressed during the entire shift?

I lift the throttle while the clutch is depressed. The car shift smoother after 20 mins of driving. I know it is not a Honda, but it is notchy for the 1st 20 mins no doubt.

Please do me a favor and for one single shift when cold, don't lift the throttle at all. Hold the pedal down in exactly the position that it was in before pressing the clutch.

Let me know if your shift was smoother or worse.

Interesting... I'll have to try that myself. Only catch is that I'm usually flooring it, and the engine will simply bounce off the rev limited until I get it in the next gear & drop the clutch pedal :)

Have used Redline 75/90NS with 1~2% friction modifier for 5 years. Add just enough friction modifier to eliminate differential chatter. Excellent gearbox oil. Specs match well the original Agip product Ferrari specifies. Fellow Ferrari owner Birdman commented my 348 spider shifts as well as his Honda! Of course maybe his Honda has a problem!

For what it's worth, I also spoke with Red Line and they told me to use W75-90NS for the 348 trani.

So right, I could kiss you today. Just Kidding. Took the car out and kept the throttle in the same position while shifting and not lifting off the throttle and it was smooth like butter. I was scared becasue the car was cold. I said what the hell, I just went for it and it slipped into second gear so smooth, I could not believe it. You the man. Thanks GQ...

    Sweet!

Just this week I was thinking about you. I was taking a new prospect for a ride in my 348. He's got a souped-up Honda S2000 and he was stunned by my easy shifts. "How can you do that with a gated Italian shifter?" he asked!

Glad you posted to this thread because I wouldn't have found it to give you a bump, but during that drive I was hoping that you'd tried my little shift trick.
