I have a 79 308 carbed car. Oil sender is leaking slightly. Ordered the specific unit from superformance M-16 threads for a 79 GTS and it isn’t matching up. My unit when removed has substantially smaller threads. When I removed it it looks like there is a brass piece still in the engine. I noted this piece “A” in the picture.
The “B” is part of the sender unit that comes out. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The last picture is both the old unit and the new unit side by side on the bench. The old unit is on the left. The “B” is the small threads on the unit. Smaller than the superformance model which is M-16.
In the other pictures the “A”is what is left in the engine when I removed the oil sender unit. If I pull that brass part out will the larger superformance part just thread in there?? Image Unavailable, Please Login

I can't answer your question but you've already done most of the work so why not just remove the adapter (part "A") and see if the new sender screws in? I'm betting it does but heck, it wouldn't take two minutes to check! :)

My 78 had the same issue. I think there were two adapters on mine. It was set up such that there wasn't enough room to remove the sending unit with the filter base still on the car.

The easiest thing to do. Remove the filter. Remove the entire filter base. You'll be able to remove the adapter from the filter head. Figure out which thread is on the new sending unit. Adapt as necessary. re-install with good sealing washers.

Ok. I will see if I can get it out. I appreciate the help. I didn’t know if that adapter piece was affixed permanently or not.

6 years ago I replaced my oil pressure sender and noticed the new one on the left has a smeller orifice than the one I replaced.
I was told the only difference with the smaller orifice is that there will be a slight delay in the system gauge response, not a big deal.

There was a oil filter mounting base change somewhere around the transition from the Bs/Ss to the Bi/Si cars, IIRC.

The oil sender's thread sizes changed for some reason with the Bi/Si senders being significantly MORE Expensive.

I have often wondered if a 'Retrograde' swap was possible for my GTSi.

My 78 gts had same problem with Superformance oil pressure sender. Just remove adapter and screw sender directly into oil filter adapter. Make sure you have O ring washer otherwise It might leak.
