After much thought and research, I finally pulled the motor out of my 78 400a to prperly address the timing chain replacement (43,000 miles). Doing a full engine out service including timing chain, all pads / tensioner etc. Incredible castings these guys come up with, real art. I will do the water pump bearings/seals and inspect oil pump.

It was interesting to pull the oil sump and timing case to see the tan paint used on the inner surfaces to be peeling and flaking. My question for those out there who have been through these engines is , after removing all of the factory applied interior surface, paint should another coating be applied? I have heard of pourous castings and weepage, but does this really happen if the coating is not re-applied?

Glyptol is a great product used by many engine builders to coat the insides but as with any paint or coating it is all in the prep work. Even Glyptol has been known to flake off. Could be that residual oil is retained even after cleaning inhibiting adhesion. Thoughts / recommendations?

I can provide detailed photos of the water pump tear down if any are interested, let me know, I will post them.

There have been several interesting findings in the tear down which I will share in other postings.

    Thanks!

    Godspeed!

Good idea to replace oil pump bearings etc while youve the engine out, I am just about to do the same as the bearings have gone re my thread 'Oh Oh oil pump' Would be interested to know any significant findings you had on your next threads.

If the coating is indeed there to seal porous castings you'll be hard pressed to remove all the oil from same without a complete teardown and caustic bath.
It was always my understanding that Glyptol was used to aid oil return to the sump.
Sounds like the "might as wells" are starting to mount. I'd leave the coating alone or perhaps do some touch-up to it if you feel the need. Brake cleaner to wash the surfaces to be coated?
