Ali, do you go to www.themotoroilsite.com ? You oughta! More oil geeks like you! ;) It's pretty slow there, but the guy running it tries to keep it from becoming a big Amsoil advert...

P.S.-anyone that wants to learn a lot MORE about oil should go there and download The Motor Oil Bible !

I checked out that site. It is very slow. Also, too much Amsoil overlay at this time.

    Thanks for the link.

    Ali,

I was in Wal-Mart today buying some oil and looked at some Castrol Syntec. Both the 5W-50 and 10W-40 had the usual API roundels saying they were rated SL/CF, but they also had text separate from the roundels saying they met or exceeded the SM standard. So it seems SM oils are already on the market. But I don't understand why the oil is still rated SL. Any insight?

They could say what they wanted but could only use the official "donut" designation after 30 November 2004. If that can was made today it could be labeled with the new standard, SM.

I read that Mobil 1 had changed their formulation back in June or July. It was probably SM at that time but again they can only start using the designation now.
