Anyone know where the sensor is? If I can get to it easy I should be able to ground the wire and the gauge should go all the way to the right? That would at least tell me if it is the sensor - correct?

Yes, the oil temperature sensor is on the bottom of the oil tank, and it is rather "famous" for the gauge to malfunction due to a weak ground for the tank. It is recommended that a ground wire be installed running from one of the studs/nuts on the bottom plate to the frame.
