So I have been searching the forum trying to find some answers, but it has been all over the board.

This past weekend, I was driving around town (city driving), and noticed all of the sudden my oil temp went from normal (just on first line of guage) to tapping the red with a light flash, then falling back to halfway point on guage. Based on my findings, it is more than likely a bad sensor? With that said, would it be safe to drive 5-10 miles to buddies house to get worked on? If it were bearing, which I also heard makes oil temp hot would it spike like that as warning?

    Thanks in advanced.

Sounds to me like a bad sensor as well. Tough to see why else it would spike quickly and drop right off.

It's almost certainly a sensor as they are known to go bad. I would doubt it would suddenly go from normal to max and back again. If in fact the oil was getting hot -- it would creep up slowly. Also your water temperature would also get really hot.

Sensor, and a short drive is fine.

Bad sensor, Instrument (less likely) or connection issue (shorts to ground).

No issue to drive anywhere, but smart to get it fixed. :D

Awesome! Thanks guys. Just wanted a little confirmation prior to driving it a short distance.

I was told it was part# 104628 and I could order it from Ricambi for $18... does that sound right?

    Thanks.

I have similar issue with my oil pressure gauge.

Most of the time it is perfect, then fluctuates a bit.

Will have the sensor replaced at the next fluid annual.

I believe it's item #89 part# 104628 $19.54 but someone confirm that as it says it's in the gearbox but listed under oil pump and sump category. I think the engine oil somehow is located in a compartment in the transmission because when they replaced my rear main oil seal they had to drain the engine oil.

Alan is correct above. The oil flows to the disaereator above down to the bottom of the diff housing where this sensor is located. Jus tbe careful when you take it out that you drain the oil beforehand! :)

Thanks for the responses! Yes, I've seen that diagram on another thread. I just ordered the part, planning on just doing full change at same time. I let you know how it goes.

I would like to know why engine oil ends up in the differential? Is it because there is a separate container in there as my mechanic had to drain the engine oil completely to pull the transmission to replace the rear main oil seal? I guess they had to have a place for the oil to drain to because if it drained to the oil pan it would flood the crank on start up.
