I took a recent trip in my 208GT4 to Italy/Austria etc from Bosnia. Checked oil before departure, all ok! Noticed oil pressure gauge was low, checked oil again, all OK. Thinking it was a sensor/gauge issue I pressed on until something went bang. Still at a loss as to where 4-5 litres of oil went over 2000km. I read a recent post that said these cars drink oil at the rate of a 1/2 litre per couple of 100 km's??
I have since stripped the engine down and found the main bearing shattered and luckily not a great deal of other damage done. What is interesting is the fact the conrods of cylinders 2 & 7 are charred black and the rest are fine. Any idea how a bearing which affects alignment of all working parts only affects/burns 2 particular conrods?
Does anyone have any tips regarding how to safely pull the cylinder bore inserts?
    Appreciate any help.
    James

Sorry to hear about the bang. To remove the liners I knocked them out from below using a tool made from aluminium borrowed from a Ferrari tech. A couple of hits and they just drop out. I will try to get a picture of the tool this weekend when I visit the machine shop. I have read some people use a puller from above and have seen a few for sale on eBay that might work even though they were designed for tractor engines!

Have you cut open the oil filter? Your symptom (plenty of oil but low pressure) can be an indication that something has collapsed inside the oil filter and is blocking the flow -- won't easy the pain, but might let you know why...

A correct oil level does not mean that the oil pressure is okay !! In a healthy engine oil pressure should be fine with oil level reading at minimum value. If any of the "vintage" gauges reads a low value check ik with an external gauge, don't ever take the readings for granted... As far as the two conrods are concerned: my first thougts are the piston rings.

I recommend you check/have all the oil channels/bores in the crankshaft checked out ! As well as all the bores that hold the crankshaft (don't know how to properly translate) : are they alligned/straight ? You should defenitively have the crankshaft balanced and measured (tolerances and straightness) And of course the gears of the oil pump. Just putting it back together with a few new piston rings and some new bearings is a recepe for disaster..

Many thanks to all. This site is amazing. Dealing with the crankshaft balance and measurements now. I'm certain it is the rings that are the major issue but will also look at all of the oil flow points and filter.

A bad turbocharger can burn an unbelievable amount of oil.

You did not say which main bearing failed. Hard to explain the rods without that knowledge.
