i want to take my 355 to the hamptons this weekend but the house out there doesnt have a garage and it may rain. Should i cover it or is it not a big deal if some rain gets in to the engine area?

I'm actually taking my car out to the Hamptons this weekend too! I did pick up a new cover for it last week, but if I hadn't I wouldn't be concerned anyway. Years ago I had my 328 out there every weekend and never had a problem. They do have windshield wipers so someone at Ferrari expected them to get wet ocassionally :).

Do you have any idea how many days your car spent outside at the factory......in transit in Europe......at port.....in transit.....at the dealer.....etc.....etc.....?

    Don't worry......it's no problem.

First off there has never been a day in the UK without rain. Second real men drive top down frogeye sprites in the snow not cars with tops. (Hoods?)

Seriously... you could just toss a blue plastic tarp over the engine louvers if you're concerned. I did that (to everyone's horror) at a recent FCA event. Then again, my car leaks like a German u-boat.

    Rick,
The BIGGEST problem with leaving the car out in the rain is having to detail it all over again..

    She'll be fine..

Ricky, long time no talk...I see you're back in the States. You should try to do a few runs with us in the TriState gang. I think over 10 Ferrari from F-Chat will in the Hamptons this weekend.

I'd hate to say this. But a Ferrari still... I can't believe i'm gonna say this... it still is a car. Paint is applied just like lower class cars, and if I can leave my civic out in the rain, I have a feeling leaving a Ferrari out isn't much different. Ever drive in the rain, wash your car? A little rain in the engine bay won't kill you.

Maybe not such a stupid question...I just bought a 308, and like my previous cars, I plan on driving it every day, but as soon as it saw rain, the headlights started going crazy!! Now the car needs to get the system checked... I was also told that water can get in the plugs if the car sits in heavy rain for long. Then again, my car is from 1979 while a 355 is much newer...they get other problems that require engine removal :)

Don't do it, the car will never be the same.

It's a well known fact driving a Ferrari in the rain reduces the value by 20% because you can't say "never been in the rain."

Also serious rust and frame rot will start immediatley with the weak Italian steel used. Dinos are known for their rust issues.

michael, given that ill only be home (in NY) for 2 weeks and in the hamptons for one weekend its tough for me to commit to coming to the party since we are having a bunch of family and friends over our house....but maybe we can play it by ear and meet up on sunday.

Not only that, but those who have been there may remember the rain booth. They put the car in there and drop 10,000 gallons of water on it (simulating rain, to make sure the owner doesn't get a leaking car) as part of the last build stage.
