So I decided I'm going to learn more about F1 because the rare times I actually get to watch it on TV (Some people still use rabbit ears people!!!) I really enjoy watching it. I have always gotten bits and pieces, more so with the tech parts. So I'm reading Formula1.com and this racing section and I have come across things that just don't add up to me. Ok so F1 has always been the the Top Dog of technology in racing right? Yet I read on the "Understanding the sport" and keeps talking about how regulations keep limiting the technology that they work so hard to achieve. 2 examples are the aerodynamics and brakes. "Revised regulations for 2005 have forced the aerodynamicists to be even more ingenious. In a bid to cut speeds..." Wha? they use all the know how to be faster and better than the other guy then NO. You can't do that. That's too good.
"{{{{So good are the brakes in fact}}}} that one of the topics for debate during the recent technical dialogue between the constructors and the FIA has been whether an increase in braking distances would make for closer racing with more overtaking. This could involve limiting brake technology through restrictions on materials or design."
Again Wha? Ok well you guys are getting too good at that too, sooo no. Stop. Lets put you back that technology you have already engineered past. Ok that's grreeaaaatt.

THEN I'm reading here and Ferrari is making a new V8 motor.... From a V10. And while discussing sounds, one posts the old V12... Wha? They're going down in cylinders through the years? Now I know this one could be argued tolds the advancement of technology making it able to use smaller displacement but still that V12 sounded soooo good compared to the new V8, I must admit. Of course both just make your spine tingle.

Am I just still to uneducated in it to "Understand the sport"?

The F1 cars get fast. Too fast. They become incredibly deadly really quickly, especially if rules were to go away. Also, it would be limited in regards to innovations. A lot of innovations you see in F1 are due to those rules and regulations which limit them in other areas, so they must work within those limits to come up with something better. Refining by leaps and bounds on the insides, but only by small steps as it appears from the fans.

Ok very valid point. Makes since to me I do get that, but what about the brake thing? They do get very fast so stopping fast should not be approved apon?

If you limit the ability to brake: i.e. - limiting the amount of air to cool the brakes, then you also limit the amount of speed that can be reached before you must brake.

also increasing the chance of an actual pass on the track. The aerodynamics right now are so twitchy behind another car that passing is really tough, except in the pits.

a good example is the turbo renaults... 1500 hp.... yikes...

faster doesn't always mean better, regulalions are made so exciting racing, technology, and buget are in balance... but as many can see that is a very very hard task.

yeah the V12 sounded great, but was one thirsty Motha*****

    cheers

I'm not talking about the recent change to v8's as that was forced by the FIA ... but more cylinders does not always mean better. While there is the volumetric efficiency advantage you have to weigh that up against extra fuel usage and the large water radiators, etc. (ie. cooling requirements).

It is the overall package that matters ... not just the sound ;)

It's not so much about limiting technology as it is about limiting engineers. An engineer who is limited in what he is allowed to design and use, has to be resourceful, therefor pushing the envelop. It won't take too long before the V8's are cranking out the HP the V10's are doing today. Remember, atmospheric V10's are pushing out more than 920 HP.

Why limit the engineers? Well, as has been said before, a very simple reason: the cars get too fast, fast.

And lets face it to increase the challenge ... :)

Technology advances come from solving limitations!

Things that you should always remember:
    1) F1 is a team sport. It takes an entire package to compete and win.
    2) The F in F1 does not stand for Formula, it stands for Ferrari.
    3) The FIA is the regulatory body that oversees the rules of the sport.
    4) There is an old stupid donkey that controls the commercial rights to F1.
