Having my gear oil in my 348 changed this week.

I whipped out my measuring beakers and obtained an exact volume for a 1% additive of friction modifier to the overall volume of gear oil.

For those of you who use Redline 75W-90NS gear oil, what percentage of friction modifier did you add (in order to combat differential chatter)?

And can someone please describe what differential "chatter" is? I've never heard it, and I don't plan on it...

For my 308 I added 2 ounces of GM LSD additive to the 1.06 gallons (slightly more than 4 quarts) of Redline 75w90NS.

The "chatter" is more of a sensation than sound. When turning a sharp corner it can be felt as a pulsating repetitive feeling of loosing and regaining traction in quick succession hence the term chatter. Most of the time it is very mild, almost un-noticable and relatively a non-issue. Sometimes it only occurs under hard acceleration around sharp corners, also a reletively non-issue. If it is more noticable keep adding LSD additive until it goes away. Hopefully this will still allow your sychros to function properly.

If the chatter does not go away you have a more serious issue to deal with.

I just used the regular 75W90 (not the NS) and didn't put any additives in. Haven't had any problems.

1/2 bottle of the GM LSD additive. Works perfect

I use ½ bottle Redline Friction Modifier in my 348 spider. A full bottle equates to the ratio added to 4 quarts of gear oil, I am at about 50%. I still experience marginal differential chatter. You can here and feel the differential clutch plates engage and disengage, my poor explanation, as you take a hard right or left corner. As the term implies, feels like “chatter” or a strong vibration(accurate term?)

I don't remember exactly at this moment, but for my 328 I think I used 3L NS and 1L normal redline.

    Thanks guys. That helps.

The gear oil tank takes four liters, but I have four 1-quart containers that I'm using to fill the tank. Using a 1% additive, that's 3.785 liters of gear oil plus .038 liters of additive (or 1.29 fluid ounces).

So basically I have some room left if I need to add additional friction modifier.

I'm exctied to see how this stuff works!

I used the plain 75W-90 NS with no additives. No problems with my 575 Maranello for thousands of miles.

If you are stopped and turn your steering wheel fully then move off slowly the diff will "clunk" not hurting anything but annoying. I had this happen in several cars before, but not a Ferrari.

If the transmission slips then you will get gear grinding because the synchos cannot do their job.

    Hello,

I have 99 Maranello 550. The dealer says you have limitted slip differential.
Which oil I should use, I get different answers.

    Thanks

I had problems with my 2000 550 with various lubes, clunk, pop around corners and such. I changed to Amsoil severe gear and everything is smooth now including smoother shifting. No limited slip lube was used and the trans is so quiet. By the way I haven't tried Redline on this car yet.

I've been using Redline's 75W90NS (the yellow stuff) plus the tiny bottle of Z-Max transmission additive (cheap way to get a 150,000 mile warranty on my Ferrari's engine and transmission) for the last 1,600 miles in my 348 Spider. Absolutely no problems. Much better shifts throughout the entire gear range...and I can shift from 1st into 2nd gear from the moment that I start the car now...no more ten minute warm-ups prior to shifting to 2nd. No more being "locked out" of a gear.

I have an '87 328 and used Redline 75-90NS with no additives. You can always add the additive later if needed. Some others have added a couple of tablespoons. You want to use as little as possible; the more you use the better the limited slip clutches work, but the worse the syncros work.
