Apparently Java will not work on my IE. It works fine on Firefox, letting me browse hotmail, etc, but not on IE.

I checked 'internet options >> enable java' and yes it is enabled.

I tried turning off my antivirus to see if it was blocking it...no effect, still doesn't work.

I ran a updated adaware, with no success. My antivirus (systemic or whatever) is also upto date and was run, also with no success.

The issue is that I can't update windows anymore as windows update doesn't work unless you are using IE.

I tried to install IE 7 and see if that would 'patch' it, but it will not let me. I can't update/reinstall SP2 to see it that helps as it will not let me.

I tried to download windows defender, but it will not install. I get the same error as you get if you tried to install it on a windows 2000 computer. (I forget the prompt, I think it said cryo something or another, but I don't remember. It was NOT the GDI warning IIRC)

Any suggestions on what to do/look at?

    Possible virus attack??

Might want to run microsoft's malicious software tool, and then try again.

I strongly suggest updating to IE7.

Also, if MST doesn't work, roll back your registry to the last time IE6 did work. You know how to do a registry restore, right???

That is what I am thinking (and fearing).

I ran the Mal sofware tool earlier in the morning (With Feb '07 build) and also had no results.
I wanted to but simply am not able to update to IE7. I will try again later today and report the exact message I get when I try. Something along the line that I need to contact my administrator (when I am the administrator!)

I tried to do system restores, but not a single one succeeds (now).

Are you running windows Defender or live one care?

If so, they sometimes take over and fool your computer about who's the admin.

Try shutting down those items if you're running them and try the other steps again.

What are you using for anti virus and firewall?

Dave and any other computer experts - may I please add an IE7 question?

I just upgraded to IE7 and the appearance of the text on webpages has changed. It has become somewhat fuzzy and it is actually giving me a headache.

I looked under Tools etc. but I don't see anything related to sharpness of text.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

This is due to ClearType rendering and is on by default in IE7. To turn off, go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced Tab | Multimedia Subsection | Always use ClearType for HTML and uncheck this option.

If you have a flat panel display, my recommendation is to leave it on. An old CRT style monitor, turn it off.

Thank you very much Mike - that did the trick.

Strange that I have a flat panel and it is so much easier to read with ClearType off.

    Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Two ways to Java in IE, the old Microsoft runtime engine (outdated!) or use the Sun one. One recommendation is to re-download the latest build of Java 1.5 from the Sun website (http://java.sun.com/) and install it. If prompted to install plug-ins for Internet Explorer, click yes. Thereafter, Java should load in IE and use Sun's Java engine. You can confirm this based on check boxes in the Tools | Internet Options | Advanced Tab | Java (Sun) Options Subsection - you want to use the Sun JRE for Applets.

Give this a shot and report back.

Nope. I was not able to download defender.

Symantec for anti virus; firewall is default windows (disabled or enabled, no effect)

I did this in the morning, and indeed the box for version 1.50_11 is selected/checked.

Basically what happens is that when I, say login to hotmail, it immdediately gives me a "page cannot be displayed" error.

I just tried reinstalling defender, and I got the error 'verify you have sufficent previlages to start system services.'

If I try to use windows update, I get [Error number: 0x800B0001]

Interesting. I tried to verify my windows, and it says code not available. [Error code: 0x800b0001]

My windows is real, btw. (ie not a bootleg)

    FIXED

I did the following and that cured my 0x800b0001

Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL" (w/o the
quotes). You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL" (w/o the
quotes). You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL" (w/o the
quotes). You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 wintrust.dll (w/o the
