My manual isn't any help, and I don't see one real obvious.

I hope I don't have to take the airbox off again to get to it.

It's mounted in the crossover pipe between the top of the two cylinder heads where the hot coolant exits the engine -- item 35 in this jpeg:

    Thanks.

It looks like it is underneath the pipe?

How in the hell are you supposed to get to it without taking the carbs off and the cross over pipe off if it is underneath?

Trying to track down a probable electrical problem, water temp gauge goes up to 225F (variable, it goes up,a nd then come down and goes up again, no rhyme or reason, T stat is new, still does it same as with old Tstat), oil pressure gauge goes down at same time to zero (at idle), normally runs ~40 PSI at idle, oil temp is constant at about 190F, though. IR gun on black painted thermostat housing shows 195F under the Tstat, and about 185 on exit pipe to radiator.

I suspect I may have ground issue in my instrument cluster, or maybe a wear thru in the oil and temp sender wires.

Instrument cluster removes by popping four corner lights out of the panel?

    Thanks,

    Doug

Doug, make sure you have a good ground strap between engine and frame. I was having all kinds of crazy gauge readings and it was driving me crazy. One day I saw the ground strap between engine and chassis was falling off and corroded. I replaced the ground strap with a new one and viola, gauge problems fixed!

Yes, grounds are an interesting problem, you can get weird feedbacks thru other systems, etc if a bad ground exists.

That was one thing that was on the top of my list, was check all grounds, including battery to frame, as I have a low voltage (10.5V) in the car (not running), but battery is OK at 12.8V.

I grounded the snot out of everything when i rebuilt my Corvette, including adding several new grounds, and all the electrical problems disappeared

    Thanks,
    Doug

Curious as to whether if you fixed your water temp gauge issue, and if you had to get to the water temp sending unit? Working on getting my '79 GTS back on the road and the water temp gauge is stuck on the bottom end reading.

Of course I have already taken apart the top half off the carbs and the fuel lines and have put them all back together. So I am hoping I can still get to the sending unit if need be.

I have not yet, and the problem never repeated itself, and the sensor is not easy to get to, so it was placed on look at it later, if need be, status. I am in the process of starting to rebuild the window lifter motor assemblies, and then make sure all electrical connection are good from the battery and all grounds are OK.

I also notice the thermal switch controlling the fans is inconsistent, so it will be replaced, it may be suffering the same contact oxidation that everything else suffered while in 15 year storage.
