I'm one of those guys seriously thinking about a Ford GT (for all the obvious reasons), now that prices are down to sticker (http://www.FordGTprices.com).

In fact, I have an appointment with a dealer next week to spec the car, and get my order in the pipeline. But now that the moment of truth approaches, I've begun to think about what else I could get for the same price.

So here's the game: You've got $165K. You can buy new cars at MSRP (knowing that even the Z06 will be at sticker sometime next year), or buy old cars if you want.

    Here's an obvious alternative:

    Corvette Z06 $70K
    Lotus Elise $45K
    Audi S4 $50K

    And your choices are ? ? ? ? ? ?

i've thought about this as well, and have been leaning towards a nice 355 and a viper srt-10.

i love the gt but think that maybe next year you could pick up one for 115-130k range maybe less.

355 is a great looking car to me, and a srt-10 would be a cool convertible that would be easy to mod if you wanted.

An appointment for a Ford GT? 2006 Allocations have not been released yet, and all 2005 Allocations have been given out, and received for production. No dealer is "sitting" on a 2005 Allocation.

Are you one of the lucky ones that actually found a dealer X-years ago that put you on a list and took a deposit (msrp)? If so, congrats. Stick with the GT.. no matter what sites tell you about its market value.. a 2006 Ford GT is not the worst investment you could make (will absolutely hold its value better than a Gallardo).

I've seen 2 Ford GT's on the road.. they are absolutely the most flashy new car you can buy right now. Go with the GT.. after getting MOBBED like a rock star the first few times you go out on the town with it, you will be very happy you chose the GT (so will the ladies!).

I would buy a used DB9 or a F512m and be done with it.

A pdf of the Ford 2006 GT allocation memo (sent to dealers a week ago) is here: http://www.fordgtprices.com/images/HazelAllDealerLetterGAlloc.pdf

If you read that memo, it turns out that in fact, there are even some 2005 model year cars that have not been allocated: "Due to the fact that we have exceeded the build schedule on the 2005 model Ford GT, we have additional Ford GT's that have not been allocated to dealers. The additional cars have been allocated in a random lottery to dealers that have not yet received Ford GT allocation."

I've talked to a local dealer a few times. Several months ago I told him that prices would be at MSRP this fall, and we should talk when he got info on the 2006 ordering.

He called me yesterday, said that I was right, prices were at sticker "or a bit below" (his words), and as I said I have an appointment next Tuesday to spec the car the way I want it before he places the order.

Buy one H2 and keep the balance for gas (should get you through the year!).

    $165k budget
    -$65k for H2
    =$100k for gas!

Or you could go with my choice, which is to get a 993TT, send it to RUF, and spend the remaining $50k or so on a nice luxury car or SUV to drive every day.

Sweet, thanks for the info.. gotta give my guy a call.

Glad to see the 'Heritage' Paint is the limited color that commemorates the 40th anniversary 1966 wins. Thats what I plan to order. Its funny how things work out. At first I was PISSED my dealer did not receive a 2nd 2005 GT allocation... but now I'm glad, since I've wanted the Blue w/Orange stripe color ever since I saw the original.

Can you get an older Diablo and an F355 for that? It's possible me thinks.

$165k will get you a Hennessey 1000hp Twin Turbo Viper Roadster OR Coupe.
(800hp Twin Turbo Viper will only run you about $135k)

I think a Twin Turbo Viper needs to be in my future at some point.

I do think it's a buyer's market now. If your dealer doesn't make you happy, get on the phone.

The memo does say that the Gulf color scheme will be limited availability, tho (and it's expensive!).

I think I'm going for dark blue, no stripes. I think the dark colors hide the many black aerodynamic add-ons and conceal the not-exactly-world-class panel gaps.

I don't like having a lot of cars in the driveway so I would go with:
    '64 Lincoln Continental Convertible - $25k + $5k for mods
    360 - $120k + $15k for mods

You have great taste!!!! I currently own a "Copperhead edition" SRT-10 Viper and I love it!!! As far as a Ferrari, I am looking for a TR (89-90) but the 355 is a very good choice as well... Can't go wrong with your selections.....
