Long story short; over a very drunken bar night at school, a group of my friends and I all agreed that we were to head to Oktoberfest in Munich over the last weekend (I believe September 29-October 5)-- and seeing that none of the 4 of us have ever been to Germany (and most haven't been to Europe), I figured that I'd turn to my Fchat brethren for some advice..

Also, considering we decide to go, I’d love to have some contacts in the area just in case something were to happen to any of us..

Thank you! Any and all advice is much appreciated.

For this year it is very late to book a hotel near to the Oktoberfest area. If you are at the Theresienwiese (place, where the Oktoberfest is held) it is very important to find a place at a table in one of the festival halls (or tents ?).

    No place -> no beer.

You will find much more people from all over the world at the Wiesn then munich residents.

Be careful, much beer could be dangerous... :D

So we bought the tickets-- flying in September 29 and leaving the 5th of October; have absolutely no hotel reservations and no sleeping arrangments, have agreed that the only clothes/supplies we will bring will fit in a backpack, have NO connections in Germany (as of yet), and plan on having an absolutely amazing time :).

Interested in joining us on our little adventure?

Would love to have someones # just in case we run into trouble..

anyway and for any case if you get in trouble with the german law/police please feel free to call me over my cell: (dial from germany) 0170-1647222

Read this post to my friends and got a good laugh, we're all super excited.

How far are you from the festivities? Would love to buy you a beer and hang out one of the days.. Also, I NEED to get out on the Autobahn while I'm there.

Take great care whilst drinking. I did everything wrong:
United were playing B. Munich in autumn 1998 ... my pal and i were dropped at the festival site.
We found a spot near an empty table, just before noon, befriended a buxom servng wench, who served us a stein or two as we temporarily hijacked a reserved table.
More people joined us, the bier flowed and all was well in the world.
At around 3pm the band announced that all tables were now a free for all and reservations were no longer valid. We relaxed and made ourselves "at home".
The bier continued to flow liberally, however one is not allowed a recharge unless the previous stein is emptied....sensible.
I recall some food came and went.
Time to go to the match - aprox. 6pm (ish).
Walked out of the tent and .....
    that was it !

Neither of us can recall how we travelled to the olympic stadium .... i fell to sleep in the loo and emerged thinking it was half time ... entered the stadium to discover the game was over.
Followed some folk to a bus ... got on it, and fortunately ended up at the airport. Slept there for nine hours. Missed plane home.
My pal ended up in the city overnight, and returned home the day after.

Sorry to rabble on, but be careful .... there are regular fatalaties.
    but nonetheless, enjoy.
cheers, (or should i say "prost" ?) d

That game was the 1-1, right? I never went to the Wiesn, I don't drink. But I am a fanatical FCB supporter, although inactive now (since I live in the states now). I did go to the match in Chicago last year though. It felt good to support with my old friends again.

    Sorry for the hijack.

Sorry Wolfgang, this is absolutely wrong. approx. 70% are Bavarian at the Wiesn - every new stat will show you this. Normally we start there for lunch (one Mass -translation: one litre Bier and a half Hendl - translation: half chicken) and go back to office. After work we go home chance our clothing into the traditionally outfit - men = Leather trousers, women = Dirndl. Then we go back to the "Wiesn" and drink a few Mass more. The normal tents close at 23:00 - latest call 22:30. There are a few smaller tents which opened longer but they are fullybooked on every day.

That's absolut correct. good observation. :)

    ATTENTION:
Be very careful with the girlfriends and wifes of the Bavarian's. Some of Bavarian mens drink between nine and ten Mass - this is 10 litre of heavy beer (not I - I have enough after four or five). In this state sometimes they are very aggressively when you talk or finger with their girls. I saw it more then one time that some foreigner winged in one meter high level cross through the tent after they catch a slap in their face. Again. Be carefully - the securities and police are normal also Bavarians, so don't think about help at this side.

    Ok. Have fun.
