Adelaide '91.... my first rally in the 328, won my first Ferrari trophy for 'fastest matched laps' as they had back then. We all had such a good time, it was when I first met Nigel, Simon & the gang and attended many more together... great memories
Fair enough. Happened to who? Dropped a valve while in John H's possession is what I read out of that. John H drove it hard and it dropped a valve while delivering it to it's next owner. Sounds like it dropped a valve while John H was driving it over to the new owner to part with it. I just fried a valve typing that.
First group photos Adelaide '91, second group as Scott said Pebble Beach '94... so you were good on the '94
I seem to recall there was over a 100 of us Aussies invaded that event, there was some simply magnificent cars that I had only seen in books & then saw in the flesh, eyewatering stuff. I remember seeing 250GTO's & 288GTO's parked out in the street around the hotel, just mind blowing. ... & funny moments... funniest was standing next to Peter Duddy at the auction of the first ever 355 to be seen in public, with simply everyone in attendance (Phil Hill, Piero, Luca, Isabella Rossellini) & him being a little alcohol affected, he had made the last & highest bid on it, the auctioneer is still trying to bid it up & then john Hall who was on the other side of him nudges Duddy in the arm & straight away Pete puts his hand up & over bids his own last bid...very funny. As I remember in the light of sobriety the next day Pete was a little worried he had just bought a left hand drive that couldn't be used in Aus & even more embarrassed when we told him he over bid himself.
Ahh yes the 355 charity auction, that was pretty funny. It turned out ok in the end as he was able to get it swapped somehow for a very early Oz delivered car. As I recall that was the release of the 456 at something like $220 k US. Seemed like all the money in the world at the time.
Yes he had a meeting with the Americans & Italians the next day or so & they worked it out as you say with swapping for an Aus complied RHD. I hadn't remembered about the 456, I guess the 355 episode has stuck in my mind It WAS a lot of money then. What were some of the highlights for you, have you been back to another over there since?
I was there too, as i said. Loved some of the very fancy restored US cars. Fascinating. Laguna Seca was a never seen before extravaganza. Then we did the bondurant course in phoenix, which was fun, if a little hot
