I have a canister of gas. It is several years old and I don't want to have it around any longer. What should I do with it? I have little confidence in some gas station clerk if I walk up to him with it. I was looking at the city's earth911 website, but they only talk about motor oil.
I think you just missed the city's free household hazardous waste dropoff program, a couple of weeks ago. Check with them for the next session.
If it is not totally varnish, you might try mixing it a little at a time in your everyday car and burn it up that way.
Ok, I'll ask the CTA bus driver whether he minds me mixing it in. Seriously, it probably is perfectly fine fuel, I just don't want to risk it in my Ferrari's engine. Besides, it probably is the wrong octane # anyway.
Put some "Sta-Bil" in it, and it should be ok. Thats exactly what Sta-Bil is for. But, normally, put it in right when you get it and it prevents gas from breaking down. Or you can give it to some Landscapers. I bet they'd put it in one of their machines.
LOL! You know, actually, the Chicago River has gotten much cleaner in the past few years. There is even Bass and other Game fish in there now! Remember back in the '60's and '70's. Lake Erie was the poster child for Polluted water. But now, it is so clean, it is (honestly!) the Walleye capitol of the World! No bull!
You can always hold onto it for a few more months and then put it on Ebay. You may get a lot for it then????
LOL! Yes, I believe that is correct....maybe from too many people dumping their old gas into it.... But, would make a hell of a "Ready Made Fish Fry!"...
Yeah, really. You probably only paid $2.13 per Gallon for that Gas....It has already made you a tidy profit! Maybe you should just hold onto it! What a great investment idea!
Here is a link to the ILEPA household hazardous waste collection events. http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/hazardous-waste/household-haz-waste/hhwc-schedule.html
Yes, out here. in the 'burbs, and I'm sure they have them in the City, too. They have specific days scheduled where you can drop off old Hazmat to be disposed of properly. Usually at a Municipal garage or something like that. Old car Batteries, Batteries, Computers, Old Gas and Oil, Paint thinner and Varnish, Old wedding pictures of your ex wife....smething like that. uff like that. Also, I know that some Auto Parts stores, like "Murray's", will take your used oil from home oil changes. But, they will only take the Oil, not the container. Maybe they'd take old gas, too.
Gasoline is usually not a problem. Most people in the 'burbs will just dilute it and burn it in the lawnmower. I used to dispose of my left over snowblower fuel this way. Since the motor oil collected may be re-refined, I don't think they will mix other products. The link I posted should have phone #'s. When in doubt, call first. Andreas, if you travel anywhere near Naperville, there is a facility there that will accept it.
