  1. Anyone own (or owned) one? I thought about getting a old Land Rover and started looking. Any helpful helpful ideas (or sites) on old Land Rovers, year late 50's to 1980? What to look for ? What to pay for one?

There is one that uses the same shop as I use for my cars, and all I can tell you is it is there at least twice a month. They have added power steering, better brakes, and updated most of the systems. The guy has spent a ton of money on this thing, but from what I heard the engine is solid, but in stock form, they are brutes to drive on the roads.

I had a 1971 Series IIA 88 inch for a number of years back in the 1990's. Rovers of that age are extremely simple in design and easy to work on. A good spare parts/support community exists. While the body is generally aluminium, the box ladder frame is steel. Make sure it is straight and rust free, especially in the areas that could be impacted in a front or rear crash.

felt compelled to 'chime in'...Land Rover's are the biggest POS cars ever made. Will cost a fortune to maintain and are ALWAYS breaking down. My strong recommendation, look into alternatives, they are 'cool' to look at, but that is as far as it goes. All based on my own big time losing experience.

I think those that buy them new (big bucks) get a lot of satisfactory miles..up to 60-70K, then they off them to some sucker who gets reamed, that was me :(

What model was this? Probably the new stuff.

I am a diehard LR fan. However, I prefer the older stuff. Even up to 2001. They are POS per say but it really depends on who's servicing them I find. In reality they are failry simple.

  6. I want a old one, think Wild Kingdom style haha. I 've owned plenty of British stuff, 70 Mini, Tr3, Tr4, MGB, so I expect some prince of darkness electric problems & other things. It looks like the frame is the sore spot. I have never seen any other vehicle that had so many frame replacements (actually I cant think of any).

Old Landrovers are extemely simple to work on compared to any modern car. I had one and the entire electrical system had only 2 fuses!

Series IIa cars have positive earth electrics which can be a problem.

The construction is a steel ladder frame chassis with a steel & aluminium bolt on panels. The whole car can be dissasembled and put back together with a small number of spanners!

It was a '98 Range Rover HSE 4.6....something new broke every week, and the SOB left me stranded on the freakin' hwy more than once! :/

For just what I lost $$ I could have added a Ferrari to my stable! I am guessing the REAL old ones that aren't rusted out could be a decent possibility?

Well I can't argue with you there. I am a dealer and just last week I unloaded an old 96 P38 (RR) which sat unsold for almost 3 years! The P38 is very nice and very bad all at the same time!

Personally, I'd go Defender. Or even a good Disco series 1 is a blast and there are tonnes of parts for them. Just get one with a good body and mechs to start. I've had dozens!

    Nice :D

Joey- If all the rubbish posted here has not scared you off a series Rover, go to http://www.landroverexchange.com

Excellent website to buy/sell/find restoration parts/advice/etc.

I've had 3 series Rovers. They are OLD trucks by now (hell, they were old trucks when they were born!), with all of the problems typical of old, worn agricultural vehicles. They are great fun; they engender more friendly comments than most Ferraris, and they are (relatively) cheap. They also go where most Jeeps fear to tread, if that's your thing.

I traded my last one (a rare, restored Dormobile camper conversion) straight across for a Disco S1, which I have had now for 14 years of trouble-free driving.

(of course, over that long, I have spent more than the purchase price in service bills...)

If you drive any modern car or truck, you will be shocked by how ancient they feel. Lots of fun though, just at a slower speed.

  12. Haha. Well it's a little too late for me now. I bought a 70 Rover, it's in Sarasota Florida at the moment. Hopefully I will get it in the next few days.

Me and my cousin bought a Series III earlier this year with low milage and knackered suspension and a rusty chassis
We bought it for £2500, spent around 500/600 quid fixing it up and sold it to my cousin's friend for £4000! :D

I HIGHLY recommend you get an old landy, the series 3 was very easy to work on and also very fun :)

    Have fun!

Here is my 72 Land Rover 109 I had when I lived in Africa, this old beater ran me all over the continent, broke down constantly but was easy to fix. Top speed was about 45 mph with all my gear loaded on it.. When I was finished with her, I traded her to a local African for a whole store full of African tribal artifacts which I shipped back to the states..

    great truck, great memories..
