    Most didn't have parking brakes, so presumably they were in 1st.

    modern drivers like MS would have done at Le Mans in the 1950s. Remember, there were production cars with only 750cc and maybe 80 mph top speed that the big bore cars had to drive around in the middle of the night.

    Heard that the reason that Porsche 911s have the ignition on the left is that the car can be started with the left hand while the right hand slips the car into gear: allegedly done to ease these type of starts..

    I believe the driver that walked did so in protest of overlooked safety measures....most drivers ended up not properly adjusting belts because of the rush.
