i'm looking at a few 80's porsche's as a runabout at the moment, but don't have any experience with them yet. what would you think is better, an early 80's 931 or a mid-80's 944... and why?
85.5 and later, much better engine, brakes, ventilation. the 924 turbos, mucho lag, flat spot in the torque. 924S is ok, lighter than 944 but same engine, good autocross car
those things a super-rare in oz, and from the one's i've seen i'd be looking at around $15-20k for one that needs a total resto. besides, i've got the X1/9 which is a similar shape, only better. i'm only after a cheap runabout at the moment, just no aussie or jap cars.
I have a 1987 944S (has the 16 valve head) with 42K miles. It is a great and fun car but they are very expensive to maintain (I am not wealthy). A new clutch is being put in my car as we speak. Original 944 clutch disks had a rubber "doughnut" instead of metal springs. It is going to cost me $1,650 to repair (they ar doing a few other things like the rear main seal, the slave cylinder, etc.). New timing belts need to be done every 3 or 4 years and that runs $1,000 or so. I would stay away from 924's unless it is a 924S. I would buy a 1985.5 or later 944. It is a lot of fun! The Stick
at the moment "afford" and "want to spend" are at a bit of a polarity... mainly because of my "brink of possibly decent career" position that i'm in and my current X1/9 project. so, that's why i'm looking for best value for dosh on my runabout at the mo, my X is the one that's getting unlimited fundage.
yeah, don't think the 944 for me at the moment. what about the 924 turbo (931?) ? i'm thinking of an early 80's that's had a recent engine/turbo rebuild or at least one in reasonable condition.
