Earlier this year I bought 1949 Ferrari 166 Inter by Touring. I was told that it was the oldest road going Ferrari in the UK when I bought it. It is a 1949 VIN #017s. Does anyone know of earlier odd number VINs in the U.S.?

You are both right and I am aware of his VIN #002, but the even number cars are race cars while the odd number VINs are “road cars”. Mine is the sixth road car ever built and I am trying to see if there are any lower number VINs that are odd numbers. Again, my VIN is 017s

I believe I saw 017 in Vermont some years back.

I know Robert Lee's collection has or had 011 S. It was at Quail in 2019.

Perhaps Marcel can add to this.

Thanks to everyone that commented! I am excited to start showing my “new” car. Although it has been restored, It still has the original engine, trans, differential etc. and has a Red Book certification on these items. It has also been in the Milla Miglia race four times, as recently as 2011. I will look for the Vintage forum and further the research! Again….thanks everyone!

    I count 7th, even if you exclude 001/S and 003/S. 005/S, 007/S, 009/S, 011/S, 013/S, 015/S and 017/S.

Depending on definition of a road car, I would seriously consider 0002/M. Completed in 9/48, exported to USA 3/49 and never raced.

Kare, my understanding of the odd number cars being identified as “road cars” can be determined by the carburetors. Race cars have 3 2-barrel carbs while the road cars have one 2-barrel carb. This of course, gives the race cars more horsepower. If there are other distinguishing factors I am not aware of them.

One more thing…my real goal is to find out how many of these original cars have survived and whether or not they are in the U.S. I note that 002 is in the U.S. and 016 is in the Revs Institute in the U.S. I hope to be able to share knowledge on these and other cars in the U.S.

I don't think so. Even many 166 Barchettas were built with a single carb. Some of them were later upgraded, some weren't. Same goes for road cars. Here's a hot forced induction set-up from a race car. Wonder what the judges would say...

LOL here! That looks like a home-made supercharger! I think the judges would get a good laugh out of this one.

Let me add that by "forced induction" I mean use of air pressure created by a scoop at high speed, not a separate charger. Ferrari experimented with these set ups from 1951 and it seems to have increased the peak power = top speed noticeably on fast tracks. The final versions was the sealed tray with velocity stacks as seen on 250GTs from 1957 onwards. 6-carb engines with better air flow apparently did not need one.
