The concencus seems to be, don't use anything, but if you must, Marvel's Mystery Oil is the additive of choice for gas and oil, and water wetter for the radiator.

I use a little Marvels in my gas and oil. Put somke in with each change of oil, and every other tank of gas.

TechronIII concentrate injector & fuel system cleaner, has a good record. Been recommended by fchat members since day 1. (Search the body of posts in old & new fchat for 'techron'.

It's my 1st treatment whenever car doesn't seem to be running right. In addition to cleaning out deposits, it also removes any water that snuck/condensed in.

I use 1 container in ~1/2 tank of gas.

Again, only recommended when a fuel flow related problem, or rough running appears.

Other than that, I avoid additives, most are 'snake oil'.

I've added Z-Max's tiny bottles to my 348's tranny fluid (Red Line 70w90) and engine oil (Red Line's 5w30), mostly for their 150,000 mile engine and transmission warranty...but I have great shifts, my Spider runs cool, revs smoothly, and has good power.

There seem to be a lot of F-owners and aircraft owners who use Marvel'
s Mystery oil in their gasoline, which I haven't done in the past 10+ years (did it on an old 300ZX back in the late 1980's that went 120,000+ miles with no troubles).

I've used both "40 Below" and Red Line's Water Wetter at various times in my 348's radiators...both (not at the same time) work well.

I've used Lucas Oil additive in the past -- they're actually a Ferrari Club sponsor and provided some for event door prizes. I do still regularly use their gas additive -- it is probably like Chevron Techron. Lucas is well known for their racing sponsorship and use by race teams.

Additives to oil are only warrented when encountering significant problems in high milage vehicals with clearance problems or ring wear associated with high oil consumption, then what do you have to loose? Go for it! But with engines in relatively good condition use a top synthetic with no additives, if you do you are in danger of upsetting the additve package that already exsists in the oil.
With regards to fuel additives the story is completely reverse from oil. I have disassembled many motors who's cylinders were completely dry by not using any fuel additives such as some type of upper cylinder lubrication, in addition these same motors had significant carbon deposits in the combustion chambers and the backs of the valves were so clogged with very thick carbon that flow was significantly impaired. I have also torn down engines that had carbon removing additives used their whole life and the evidence will make a believer out of you. They were flat clean! They really work! I am not talking about using these products only when the motor starts to run rough but rather use them every tankfull to keep it clean.
I personally use Lucas complete fuel conditioner which is lube and injector cleaner in one, but I also use MMO and STP gas treatment and or Techtron. Combining an upper cylinder lube and a carbon remover is also something I do. Pick whatever snake oil you like, but use it always. Your engine will run smoother and you will have better milage and higher octane for the effort.

Very (!) interesting how it has the effect of "encapsulating" air into the oil. :(

No Dought, I have not used Z-Max. I am wondering if it is the same formulation as Motor Silk or Av blend which I believe is some type or formulation of boron, this is the stuff that soaks into the metal and makes it super slippery. Designed in government labs and FAA approved?

I'm unclear on the details, but it does soak into metal and makes it appear "wet."

Would make for a good show n tell project for the kiddies on a school day with one piece of metal "wet" with Z-Max and another left dry.

    Hard to describe, though.

lucas oil additive claims that the oil remains on crutial moving parts for safer start ups . i figure it would be good for possible cam seal problems, and when the car is not run for periods of time to prevent "drying out"...
they have a decent following ..
