I agree with reserve driver test days. Hell, do it in last years car even. I do not like young driver tests during the Grand Prixs either. If I am paying $5000 to go see F1, I do not want to watch a young drivers test and then have my favorite drivers get hindered during the weekend because they miss an entire practice session.

 

On the other hand, simulators are now very close to the real thing (of course, not exactly the same) - Verstappen being at the top in both real car and simulator is a good sign that they're not that different (typically, to be the best one needs to be really specialized - being the best at two things kind of indicates they're almost the same).

 

I already mentioned compulsory testing for reserve F1 drivers, and regular refreshers.

Vasseur downplays future Ferrari F1 chance for Bearman
Ferrari Formula 1 boss Fred Vasseur has downplayed the prospect of Jeddah rookie sensation Olivier Bearman eventually graduating to a race seat with the Maranello team.


The Frenchman says that the 18-year-old should concentrate on his F2 programme and make the most of the Haas FP1 running that he has lined up.

Ferrari has no vacancies for the immediate future as Charles Leclerc’s contract was recently extended, while Lewis Hamilton will join from Mercedes for 2025 on a multi-year deal.

Ferrari can potentially place Bearman elsewhere until it has a vacant seat, with Haas the obvious opportunity, although team principal Ayao Komatsu has stressed that he’s happy with Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg.

 

After his impressive performance at the Saudi Arabia GP, multiple F1 teams would be interested in having him on their team.

 

Will we see Ollie back in the car for Australia? Sainz had an incision that will take a bit of time to heal--5-6 Gs over a race distance might be rough.

 

IF Sainz is able to extract himself out of an F1 car under a certain time frame on Thursday in front of the FIA, he'll be fit to do FP(3x), Quali, and Race.

 

I really hope his is able to and hes able to make a good run of it.

Well, since Hulk is going to Sauber, this should open up an opportunity for Ollie at HAAS.

It opens an opportunity for someone at Haas, but there’s no guarantee it will be Ollie.

Yes, he qualified on pole in F2 in Jeddah, but he needs to keep up that level of performance. One standout replacement stunt in F1 doesn’t guarantee a seat. DeVries was outstanding in his fill in races in 2022, but turfed before the summer break in 2023.

Fir myself, I would love to see Bearman in F1 next year, but let’s temper the enthusiasm. I still need to see what he does in F2 this year. Remember, the last two F2 champions still don’t have seats - Drugovich and Pourchaire.

 

Drugovic is reserve driver at Aston Martin, I think.
Pourchaire is trying his hands at Indycar.
There are no seats available every year in F1.
That's the problem with F2 that shadows F1, and is not an independent championship.
