Freakin' INSANE! Holy hell... Very scary - although it gives me an entirely different level of respect for what Gilles Villeneuve did there in '79.

It's not Portland and it's not last year. That's from the Six Hours at the Glen Rolex Race in 2004. Started pouring without any warning and all the cars were caught out on slicks.

Started with a GT class Porsche, then two DP prototypes and then a few more GT class cars. I think it was 9 cars total.

The ironic things is that we have a thread on F Chat this weekend about the Grand Am fight involving JC France.

France crashed his DP in the Glen race and then got creamed by Michael Levitas in his TPC 911. France got out of the car and tried to punch Levitas while he was still in his car.

    That race was a mess.

    Regards,

    Jon

It is interesting to see how well those barriers worked. Imagine the result if there had been the typical tire wall!

Yea, that was a bad one. The difference to me is that the F1 crash was more about visibility and domino effect. This Glen crash baffles me b/c you would think a yellow flag would be flying and this couldn't happen the way it did. It leaves me scratching my head. I heard about it before, but never saw the footage. Just stumbled onto it. Sorry if this is old news, but still, if you've never seen it...WOW!

Try driving on slicks in a turd floater like that, and you'll change your tune. Yellow or not, when you can make it more than 100 feet in a frog strangler like that you're a f*ckin' champion.

Because, remember, slicks have no tread. No tread = no grip in the rain.

I've flown off the track like that with no warning on treaded tires, and it was freakin' scary. Nothing will get your heart going like flying down 1A at TWS at 90+ backwards. I liken it to running through a corn field backwards...

Once for sh!ts and giggles I practiced in the rain on slicks at MSR in my FMazda. I was the only car on track, all others stayed in the club house to witness the show. It was said I broke the track for spins with 20 or more, this was just tiptoeing around the corners and mild acceleration on the straights. The car would actually loop going down a straight.

BTW, I have not seen this film clip before ; thanks for the repost !

I worked for Kevin Buckler that year in IMSA. The Grand-Am race here was nasty. What most people don't know is that Kevin had already unbelted himself and was preparing to get out when Stanton came in and blocked his exit from the driver's side. Then the Vette came in real hard and bounced Kevin around real good inside that car. I think that Craig Stanton may have well saved Kevin's life as without his ending up next to the TRG car, Kevin would've been just getting out when the Vette hit...

Folks, I have a link somewhere on here of about every major F1 crash since 1970 caught on video - do you want me to repost it ?

I generally don't like crashes because all they do is hurt people and cost money.

Or if anyone wants it PM me and I will send it that way.
