    I don't have Cavallino # 94 which might have made this inquiry unecessary but I notice in barchettacc.com, where I saw pictures of this car, that there is a huge 30-year gap of between two owners.That's quite a long sleep in the barn.

    But that list doesn't mention what the letter from a Ferrari expert in Cavallino does, which asserts it was found abandoned in NYC, sold as chassis and body only, then rebodied. Now I am confused: is the Motto body from 002C the second body? Was the engine reunited with the car after the Hankes bought it in '86?

    But even if nobody knows the answer to the above, I will be happy about hearing about its time in the junkyard, how it was saved and what it sold for out of there? I collect junkyard stories, my favorite so far about the Bugatti Typ 41 Royale found in a NYC junkyard and bought for $412 in 1943.

    I don't have the Cavallino but I believe I have a classified for that particular car somewhere. I'd be happy to upload it if found, as well as anything else that could be relevant.

    And now a bit of a digression in order to establish a point I've been hoping to make, but waiting for the opportunity:

    That Royale purchase is so often touted as the best buy in collector car history. In my opinion, Mr. Chayne, an auto exec who purchased the Royale in that instance, didn't make out as well as you think. The car was complete, but far from driveable. He spent over $10,000 restoring it between 1945 and 47. It just has that extra sting because the monetary figure doesn't have a comma.

    I think Cunningham, who obtained two of them from Ettore's daughter in the summer of 1950, got the better buy in Royales. In exchange for 2 million francs and 2 GE fridges, which turned out to be a total of about $6,400 when all was said and done ($3,200 per car), he got the following: two Royales inclusive of factory restoration for both and shipping costs. Yes I know that was a big number at the time, in fact you can ad a zero to the number to get a sense of it's 2013 price equivalent, but he also had the option to purchase them unrestored if he had wished for 200000FF ($600 US) a piece. Unrestored as they were, they were at least driveable, but the Chayne car bought in 43 was not.

    Cunningham was wise to go with the option that included their restoration. He would sell one of them in 1952 for around $100 more than the price he paid for both of them. The other one famously sold for $8.1 million to pizza lord Tom Monoghan in 1986.

    The correct chassis number for this rare Stabilimenti Farina bodied Ferrari is four digits 0041 and not 041. Actually 0041 S with engine 0041 M (yes, letter "M" for the suffix). 0041 S was never rebodied. 0041 S has ZERO to do with 002 C.
