My wife and I are traveling to SF from Reno to meet with close friends flying in from Singapore next month. We will have only one day and night before they continue on. What is the one restaurant you would recommend for that evening in the city?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Slanted Door (doubt you will get a reservation but worth a try)
Asia de Cuba (make reservations early)
House of Nanking (they take cash only)
Betelnut (make reservations early or eat at the bar)

You can get more info via their websites or google. Enjoy!

Forgot to add, the one place I'd hit; Carnelian Room. There's a dish that is cooked on fire at your table (I cannot remenber the name), order it and enjoy the best views of the city anywhere.

If you do Slanted Door, try the live sea scallops. Trust me. ;)

Gary Denko is the place. Asia de Cuba was once good, it is terrible now. INHO Bettelnut is nothing special. Also consider 5th floor. signed long time SF resident. PB

Osha Thai on 2nd st. good food, gets busy, so make reservations.
Palomino's and Shanghai 1930 heard were good. Shanghai has live jazz music and the ambiance is good. Only had drinks there.

That's probably it; dish is beef medallions in a reduction sauce; way cool to watch! (and tasty!)

They also have a pretty decent wine list, be sure to check it out.

Amazing, exactly what I was thinking.

    Gary Danko - #1 choice
    Bobo's - never been there

House of Nanking - Hole in the wall with dubious chunks of who knows what
Osha Thai (on 2nd St) - Hip looking place with horrible food

I eat out almost every night... Osha is right near me and if I don't want to walk more than a block, I'll go there or for a quick lunch.

Bobo's is an amazing steakhouse, definitely go and request the 3rd floor.

    from long time SF resident:

Shanghai 1930..great spot good food, but I went downstairs once and saw (and smelled) the kitchen it is a horror, I never go there any more,

    Postrio=passe

Boulevard, lots of folks love it

Steakhouses-I prefer Harris (old school, martini's plus a side car, just like getting extra milkshake when you are a kid! owned by Harris ranch) to Bobos, but the important thing is you can get a great steak in a LOT of places, so if you are in SF, choose something different!!!

One place I haven't tried, but hear great things about: Chez Spencer, off the beaten track, but great setting, great Japanese Whiskey bar on the corner with great unusual appetisers.

Old favorite: Bix, down an alley in the Financial district-it's a good restaurant, but a great bar for a drink before dinner, rumor has it it was the site of a speakeasy during prohibition.

Aqua-great food, but the standard for over priced and under served. I have to have lunch with business clients there once in a while, usually need to get a cheeseburger afterwards, it you like a half dollar sized piece of fish for your entree it is a good call, just order additional courses.

Another fun spot for a pre dinner drink and an appesier-Farallon the restaurant is done up to look as though you are underwater. It is beautiful, food is good. It is off Union square.

Opentable.com will allow you to book on line and see pic's menus etc. reservations are necessary at virtually all the places listed, unless you want dinner at 545pm or 1030pm
